The Basics

Lightroom Mobile is a free app that lets you create, edit, and share high-quality images. Embedded Adobe Photoshop technology provides you with over 30 presets, allowing you to experiment with color, clarity, vignetting, and more—all for free. Upgrading to a Creative Cloud Photography plan gives you access to a few more editing options, as well as syncing across devices, a customizable website, Photoshop, and cloud storage.

Creative Cloud plans and pricing for individuals vary from $9.99/month to $74.49/month (or you can pay annually in one lump sum) and usually come packaged with other perks, apps, and GBs of cloud storage. (Businesses, students & teachers, and schools & universities are offered other plans and pricing.) You can also try it out by activating a free seven-day trial.

1. Open the Adobe Lightroom Mobile App in Loupe Mode

First step, open up Loupe mode by tapping the picture/plus icon in the Library.

2. Select Your Image

Choose a nice, juicy, high-resolution DNG (RAW) image so that you have the ultimate editing latitude.

3. Tap Presets in the Edit Panel

Now select Presets from the Edit panel.

There are two tabs of presets: Premium and Library. The Premium tab includes pre-loaded Portraits, Cinematic, Futuristic, Vintage, and Travel presets.

Library includes Color, Creative, B&W, Portraits, Defaults, Curve, Grain, Optics, and Sharpening.

4. Experiment

It's super fun! This Vintage preset, VN07, gave a soft aesthetic reminiscent of sepia tone. To apply a preset to an image, tap the Checkmark icon.

5. Compare

Now let's see how the image looked before you applied the preset. Tap and hold on the image. Before at the top of the screen tells you it's the original version. To go back to the preset version, let go of your tap-and-hold.

To reverse a preset you have applied, tap the Undo icon. 

To move forward with a preset, tap the Redo icon.

6. Add More Presets

To apply more than one preset on an image, tap the checkmark icon after each preset. Stacking multiple presets let's you quickly create a stylized photo.

We liked this B&W Punch preset, but wanted to add heavy grain, too.

After selecting Heavy Grain, we tapped the checkmark icon again.

Lightroom Mobile also gives you the ability to create and save your own specific presets. Stay tuned here for a follow-up tutorial on the details!

7. Reset Some or All Adjustments as Needed

To reset the image and remove the presets, tap Reset.

Then tap what you would like to reset.

8. Manage Your Presets.

Tap on the three-dots icon in the upper right.

Then tap Manage Presets.

Select the preset group you want to manage, Premium or Library.

And then toggle on or off the presets you would like to make visible or invisible. Once you know the presets you prefer, this can help save you from having to scroll a bunch to find them.

In this quick article, we'll discuss how you can use optional function parameters in JavaScript.

JavaScript is one of the core technologies of the web. The majority of websites use it, and all modern web browsers support it without the need for plugins. In this series, we're discussing different tips and tricks that would help you in your day-to-day JavaScript development.

In JavaScript coding, you often need to make function parameters optional. When you're using JavaScript functions, there are two types of parameters: mandatory parameters and optional parameters. In case of mandatory parameters, you must pass those parameters, otherwise JavaScript throws an error. In case of optional parameters, though, if you don't pass them they will be initialized to some default value.

Today, we'll discuss the basics of optional function parameters in JavaScript and how to use them.

How to Use Optional Function Parameters in ES5 and Before

In this section, we'll discuss a solution which works even with older browsers. This was used frequently until the JavaScript ES5 era, when there was no built-in support available to make function parameters optional.

Let's go through the following example to understand how it works.

function getFullImagePath(imagePath, imageBaseUrl) {    imageBaseUrl = imageBaseUrl || 'https://code.tutsplus.com/';      var fullImagePath = imageBaseUrl + imagePath;      return fullImagePath;  }

In the above example, the getFullImagePath function takes two arguments, imagePath and imageBaseUrl. We want to make the second imageBaseUrl parameter optional, so you can skip passing it if you want to use the default parameter value for it. To make it optional, we've used the following statement.

imageBaseUrl = imageBaseUrl || 'https://code.tutsplus.com/';

Basically, we're checking if the imageBaseUrl variable is defined, if it's defined and evaluates to TRUE, we assume that the second parameter is available, and we'll use it. On the other hand, if the imageBaseUrl parameter is undefined or evaluates to FALSE, we'll use the https://code.tutsplus.com/ value as the default value of this parameter. It's important that the optional parameters should always come at the end on the parameter list.

Note that this approach won't work for numeric values because it will override the value 0. Similarly if you want to be able to pass the value null. If you want to be able to pass 0 or null into your function, you'll have to explicitly check if the parameter is undefined.

In this case, we've explicitly checked if the value of the imageBaseUrl parameter is undefined to decide if it's an optional parameter. This is a more foolproof method to decide if the parameter is optional.

So that's how you can make function parameters optional in browsers that don't support the ES6+ editions. In the next section, we'll discuss it in the context of modern browsers.

How to Use Optional Function Parameters in JavaScript ES6

In this section, we'll discuss the method that you could use in modern browsers that support the ES6 edition of JavaScript. Let's go through the following example to understand how it works. We'll rewrite the example which we discussed in the previous section with its ES6 counterpart.

If you've worked with other programming languages, the above approach to define optional function parameters may look familiar to you. In this case, the optional parameter is assigned the default value in the function declaration statement itself.

Also, you can have multiple optional parameters as shown in the following snippet as long as you define them at the end on the parameter list.

function foo(a, b=0, c=10) {    //...  }

So as you can see, the JavaScript ES6 syntax is much simpler and easier to write than the old method.

How to List Files In a Directory in PHP

In this article, we'll discuss how you can get a list of all the files in a directory in PHP.

In your day-to-day PHP development, you often need to deal with a file system—for example, getting a list of files in a specific directory. PHP provides a few different ways that you can use to read directory contents easily. Today, we'll go through all these methods along with examples to understand how each one works.

The opendir, readdir and closedir Functions

In this section, we'll discuss a family of opendir, readdir and closedir functions to see how you can use it to get a list of files in a specific directory.

The opendir function allows you to open up a directory handle, which you can use along with other functions for different operations on the directory. You need to pass a the path to the directory in the first argument of the opendir function. If the directory path is valid, a directory handle resource will be returned.

The readdir function allows you to read a directory. You need to provide a valid directory handle in the first argument of the readdir function, and you can iterate over all the entries and get a list of all files in a directory.

The closedir function allows you to close the directory handle which is opened by the opendir function. It's a good practice to use the closedir function once you've done with your operations on the directory handle (which was initially opened by the opendir function).

Now, let's see it in action as shown in the following example.

The scandir Function

In this section, we'll see how you can use the scandir function to get directory contents.

The scandir function is a pretty straightforward way to get a list of files and directories in the specific directory. You just need to pass a directory path which you want to read in the first argument of the scandir function.

Let's go through the following example to understand how it works.

As you can see, this provides a list of files and directories in a single call! If you just need to get the list of files in a directory, this is a better choice than using opendir, readdir and closedir.

The glob Function

The glob function works similarly to the scandir function with the difference that it allows you to specify a pattern for filtering and matching the files in the directory.

Let's see how to use the glob function to read all the contents of the specific directory.

<?php  $arrFiles = glob('/path/to/dir/*');  ?>

As you can see, we've passed the * pattern since we want to read all contents. On the other hand, if you want to list only specific type of files, you can do that as well as shown in the following snippet.

<?php  $arrFiles = glob('/path/to/dir/*.txt');  ?>

in this case, $arrFiles would contain only the names of .txt files.

The dir Function

The options that we've discussed so far allow you to read directory contents in a procedural way. In this section, we'll see how you can use the dir function, which is an object-oriented mechanism for reading a directory.

When you use the dir function, and pass a directory path in the first argument, it returns an instance of the Directory class, which you can use subsequently to read directory contents.

Let's go through the following example to see how it works exactly.

First, we used the dir function to initialize an instance of the Directory class into the $objDir variable. Next, we used the read method of the Directory class to iterate over all the entries.

The FilesystemIterator Class

In this section, we'll see how you can use the FilesystemIterator class to read directory contents. The benefit of using the FilesystemIterator class is that you can extend the methods of this class and it also provides a lot of other useful methods that allow you to fetch various information about the files as well.

Let's go through the following example to understand how it works.

As you can see, it's really easy to use the FilesystemIterator class and iterate over the entries. In the above example, we've used the getFileName method of the FilesystemIterator class to get the file name. However, the FilesystemIterator class also provides several utility methods like getExtension, getSize, getPathname and so on.

So that's how you can use the FilesystemIterator class to get a list of files in a directory.

You can do this either via comments, social media accounts or a contact form etc. Each of them have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Contact forms are the way to go in more formal settings or if you need personal information from clients. In this post, you will learn how to create a contact form in WordPress for free. It might take a little time but the benefits make it worth the effort.

Why Do You Need a Contact Form?

Lets begin this discussion by asking another question. Isn't it simpler to just provide some email address and other related contact information on a Contact Us page somewhere on the website? Of course, we can do that but the time you save during the initial setup will be wasted multiple times over when you have to filter out all the spam.

Anyone who has managed a modestly popular website knows that the Internet is filled with spam bots. They keep scraping webpages for any information they can get to post spam. This could include posting shady links in comments or sending emails to whatever email addresses they can lay their hands on while scraping a page.

How to Create a WordPress Contact Form?

WordPress has a robust plugins-based ecosystem which gives you a huge variety of options when it comes to setting up a contact form. In this tutorial, we will use a free plugin to create our contact form.

Go to Plugins > Add New inside you WordPress Admin dashboard and then search for Contact Form. This will show you a bunch of plugins. Read their reviews and features to see which one would be ideal for you now and in the near future.

For our tutorial, we will use the Forminator Plugin which allows you to create a bunch of other forms in the future if need arises. The first step is to Install and Activate the plugin.

After that, you should navigate to Forminator > Dashboard and then click on the Create button under the Forms section.

The plugin comes with a bunch of basic templates for common types of forms. We will just select Contact Us and then click Continue.

Specify a name for the contact form the make it easier to identify for you later, in case you decide to create a bunch of other forms.

You will see that there are some already-added fields on the next screen which include First Name, Email Address, Phone Number and Message. The asterisk beside First Name and Email Address means that they have been marked as required.

You can click on the Insert Fields button to add other fields to the form. We have added a Select dropdown for choosing a department that will handle this submission and an Input field to specify the account number for easy identification in our case. Click on Settings for the Select dropdown field to make filling it out a requirement.

Edit the label of the of the dropdown to read Choose Department and provide a list of departments for people to select.

You can always check what your form will look like by clicking on the Preview button before actually publishing it.

Click on the Publish button and you will see a shortcode. Place the shortcode wherever you want the contact form to appear.

The plugin also gives you to option to add a Google reCAPTCHA to the form to counter spam submissions. It is easy to integrate once you get your keys and secret from Google.

As you might have noticed the contact form itself comes with very minimal styling so that it blends in easily with the rest of the website design. There are four different styles under Appearance tab to choose from and they all provide minimal styling while giving a unique look at the same time. You can even tell the plugin to get rid of all the styling and use the CSS in the website's theme to style it.

Customizing the Form Submission Behavior

It is a good practice to give users some kind of acknowledgement that you have received their submission after they click the Send Message button. Almost all contact form plugins will have some settings that you can configure to either redirect users to some other page after a successful submission or show them a custom message.

Forminator gives you the option to customize form submission behavior by visiting Forminator > Forms from the WordPress admin dashboard. Select the form whose behavior you want to modify and then go to the Behavior tab. In our example, we simply tell the users that we appreciate their submission and will get back to them within 48 hours.

In another tutorial in this series on HR for small business, I covered the process of hiring employees. But hiring good people is not enough on its own. You also have to give those people the support to develop their skills and do their best work. That's where training comes in.

Here's the problem, however: Due to limited resources and other priorities, many small businesses don't provide the same kind of structured training plans that larger companies do.

So in this tutorial, we'll look at how small businesses can create an employee training plan and provide better training opportunities to employees. We'll look at some of the benefits of providing good training and then show you how to put together a comprehensive employee training plan for your small business. We'll consider various different types of training, including those with minimal cost, so that you'll be equipped to design an effective training plan, even if you're on a tight budget.

1. Why Employee Training Is Important

You probably already appreciate the importance of training your employees, but just in case, here's a quick rundown of the main benefits:

Better Productivity

When people haven't been trained, they can often still perform tasks, but inefficiently. To take a simple example, years ago I used to create PowerPoint presentations by formatting each slide individually. Then I went to a quick training event and learned to use slide masters and presentation templates.

Afterwards, I was much more productive—I could create a presentation in half the time, and the end result was much better, meaning less reworking. The same applies to pretty much any relevant skill your employees learn—it will make them better at their jobs.

People value training and development. Providing it to them will boost both engagement and loyalty among employees.

Lower Turnover

One survey found that 40% of employees leave a job within the first year if they receive poor job training. Turnover of employees is costly for your business in so many ways—not just the cost of hiring someone new, but the lost knowledge, the waste of time, etc. Train your existing employees well, and they're more likely to stick around.

Good training helps to ensure that everyone is on the same page. It gives your employees direct training on the skills or behaviors expected of them. If all your people have been trained in the same way, there's a higher chance of them doing things the same way too.

When it comes to employee training and development, you have plenty of options available to you. Here's a rundown of the main types of training you could offer, with a summary of the pros and cons of each.

Simple In-House Training

The simplest (and often the cheapest) form of training is to have your employees train each other. It makes perfect sense: Your employees all have different skills, so why not encourage them to share those skills with each other?

The advantage of in-house training is that it's simple to arrange and involves zero or minimal cost. It can also have benefits not only for the people being trained but also for the people doing the training, who can feel more empowered and gain confidence, improve their presentation skills, and so on.

The main disadvantage is that you're not introducing new skills or knowledge into the organization—you're just ensuring that what people do know is shared more widely. There may be other skills or perspectives that you can only get from external sources. And while some employees feel empowered by the opportunity to train people, others may see it as a burden—you have to be careful how you handle it.

In-house training can take several forms:

  • Informal, One-on-One Training: One employee sits down with another and explains how to use a piece of software or complete a certain business process.
  • Presentations/Brown Bag Lunches: Or if one employee has skills that could benefit a larger number of people, you could arrange a one-to-many training event. This could either be a formal presentation or an informal gathering over lunch or coffee.
  • Mentoring: A mentoring program is about much more than just training, but often there is an element of training to it. A mentor will often pass on important skills, tips and advice to the person being mentored.

Online Training

There are loads of options out there for online training. So you can encourage your employees to pick up new skills online, either with free tutorials or by taking out a subscription to let them view the video courses and eBooks too.

The good thing about online training is that it's often quite low-cost, and you can access a wide range of training across lots of different subjects. It's also flexible, so employees can easily fit it in around their other work or do it in their spare time. You don't have the problem of everyone being out of the office at the same time to attend a scheduled training event.

This very flexibility can also be a downside, however. Employees have to be quite self-motivated to complete the training, and it may end up getting postponed. It may be worth working with employees to help them schedule a few hours of regular training time each week. This also avoids another potential problem: employees feeling as if they're being asked to do work-related training in their own personal time.

Joining Industry Associations

This may not seem like a training option at first, but many industry associations do provide training for their members, as well as offering journals, eBooks and other resources that can help your staff develop new skills.

The advantage is that this is often highly targeted, specialized training for your particular industry, and it can be cost-effective. Plus being a member of an industry association has other benefits too, like networking opportunities, gaining credibility, staying up to date with industry trends, and so on.

On the other hand, the training options may be more limited than with the other options, since training is not the primary function of an industry association.

Sending Employees to External Training Programs and Seminars

There are training opportunities everywhere: seminars, conferences, specially designed training programs, and so on.

These can be great for your employees because they are often high-quality events provided by professional trainers, and they provide the opportunity to network with other people in the industry. Making this kind of investment can also show your staff that you really value their personal and professional development.

The main downside is cost. These programs can be very expensive, and then there's also the cost of travel, accommodation, etc. Large companies pick up the tab for this kind of thing all the time, but a small business may simply not have the budget for it. You're also losing that staff member and their productivity for the duration of the training.

Hiring Training Companies

A related option is to hire a training company to come to your place of work and train employees on-site. You avoid the travel expenses that way, but it can still be an expensive option. And you lose some of the benefits like networking, getting away from the office, etc.

But on the other hand, you are getting customized, face-to-face training from experienced professionals. If your budget can stretch to it, it can still be a great option.

College or Other Formal Education

Some employers pay for their staff to pursue formal education, like a business degree or an accounting qualification. This is a wonderful incentive to offer, although of course the costs can rack up quite fast. To keep to your budget, consider contributing only a certain amount and having the employee pay the rest, or limit it to shorter, less expensive programs.

If you can afford it, the benefits are a better educated and trained workforce, with the skills and qualifications to take on more responsibility, allowing you to promote from within instead of having to recruit externally for senior roles.

3. Create an Orientation Training Program

Now that we've seen the different types of training, let's start putting together a training plan for your employees.

The first place to start is with new employees: What do they need to know in order to get up to speed quickly?

The Nuts and Bolts

Some of it is the practical information we covered in the employee handbook tutorial: how do pay and benefits work, what's the policy for taking vacation, and so on. But an orientation plan will go further than that. Give the new employee a full introduction to the company: your history, what you do, why you do it, etc. What's your philosophy? How do you like to do business?

People

Then introduce the people. What's the overall structure of the business, and how will the new employee fit into that? Who are the key employees? As you know, if you've ever been introduced to a bunch of people at a large party, it's impossible to remember too many names at once. So keep it light and just focus on the key people the new employee will be interacting with at first.

Customers

And what about the customers? Who are they and what do they want from your company? This is important even if the person will not be in a direct customer-facing role. A business exists to serve its customers, so everyone in the company should understand how to do that and be working towards the goal of doing it more effectively, even if they never deal with a customer directly.

Special Processes/Software

Then cover anything specific to your company or the person's role. Do you use special software that the employee will need to learn? Do you have special processes that they'll need to understand? Any special skills that the person will need to acquire if they don't already have them?

As you've probably realized, some of the material for your orientation plan will be common to all employees, while some will need to be customized to individual employees depending on their job function, the skills they arrive with, and so on.

So start by creating a core orientation training program containing the elements that are applicable across the board, and then evaluate it for each new employee and add any necessary areas. If you hire a large number of new people, it may be worth creating "modules" of information applicable to certain common roles, such as a sales module for customer-facing staff, a module dealing with financial software for the back-office staff, and so on. Then just choose the appropriate modules for each new employee's situation.

A key element to an effective orientation or onboarding program is to run regular surveys of new employees. Catch up with them after a week or two on the job, and find out what worked and what didn't. What questions were left unanswered, and what problems did they encounter in their early days? Then incorporate that into future orientation training programs.

4. Create Individual Employee Training Plans

Getting the new employees trained effectively is a good start. Now you can move on to your existing employees. Often, managers and business owners are quite reactive when it comes to training—they wait for employees to request training, or they happen to come across a training program that sounds good, and tell employees to take it. But it's better to have a more systematic approach, and create an individual training plan for each employee. Here's how: 

Step 1. Take a Skills Inventory

Start by assessing the employee's current skills, compared with what's necessary for their job. If you created a proper job description when you hired them, you should have a clear idea of what's required for the role. Consider: 

  • How does the employee measure up? What are their strengths and weaknesses? Where do they need to improve? 
  • When you've been evaluating their performance, either formally or informally, where have they been doing well, and where do they need more help?

We're talking personal skills here, like time management and presentation skills, as well as mastery of software, processes, and other tasks necessary for performing their job. For people who manage other employees or may need to do so in future, you'll also need to evaluate their management skills.

Step 2. Examine the Needs of the Business

Although the specific needs of the employee's job are important, it's also worth going beyond that and thinking about the needs of the business as a whole.

Do you have any skill gaps overall? Are there any extra functions that you'd like this employee to take on in future, for which he or she will need training? And what about trends within the industry? Is there any new technology that the person should be trained in? New management trends or business practices that you want them to understand?

After all, training is about meeting the needs both of the employee and the business, so make sure you cover both angles.

Step 3. Take the Employee's Input

Sometimes, staff members will have clear ideas about what they want to learn. Perhaps they've heard about a new technology that they want to master. Maybe they want to move into a more senior role and want to acquire management skills.

An important part of creating a training plan is to encourage the employee to suggest training they'd be interested in. As long as it's relevant to the job and within your budget, try to accommodate these requests wherever possible; self-motivated learning is often the most effective kind. Adult learning is not like school—people need to see what's in it for them, to feel that the training is relevant, and to be fully aligned with the goals.

Step 4. Craft a Plan Together

Now that you've gathered all this information, sit down with the employee and craft a training plan together. This is something you should do regularly, at least once a year or perhaps more frequently. Plan out the skills you want to focus on in the year ahead.

Again, try to listen to the employee as much as possible. Your business has certain needs, of course, but if the employee is really resistant to the idea of learning a particular new skill, it's unlikely that the training will be effective. Be ready to compromise, and try to find a fair match between your needs and those of your employees.

When you've settled on the skills, then decide how they'll be acquired. Which of the options we looked at in section 2 will you use? Some of this will be based on your budget, and some will be based on the employee's preferences and learning style. Everyone has their own way of learning—one common framework is to break learners into three groups:

  • Visual learners respond best to pictures, videos, diagrams, and text. They need to see something in order to remember it.
  • Auditory learners learn by listening. So a lecture or other audio format would work well for them.
  • Kinesthetic learners prefer to learn by doing. They want to get plenty of hands-on practice, and it's through the experience, not the theory, that they learn best.

This is just a quick summary, and there are many other competing models out there. The basic idea to remember is that everyone learns differently. So try to get to know what kind of training would work best for each individual, and arrange training options on that basis.

5. Look at the Bigger Picture

As you craft a training plan, and as you return to it and update it each year, keep in mind that it's not just about acquiring skills—it's about the direction of a person's career.

The training that people do can often determine what opportunities are available to them, so it's important to take that into account. As well as the immediate needs of the business and the individual, also take the time to plan further ahead. What are the employee's long-term career goals? How can you help them achieve those goals?

In some cases, your employee's career path may end up taking them to roles that are simply not available in your company. You may end up training people who leave. That can be hard, but it's inevitable. If the person is determined enough, they'll leave anyway—or they'll stay and be dissatisfied. It's better to enjoy the services of a loyal, motivated employee for a few years than a disengaged employee for decades.

Or, as the long-standing corporate joke puts it:

A CFO asks, "What happens if we invest in developing people and they leave us?"
The CEO replies, "What happens if we don't, and they stay?"

Let's get started:

1. Use Your Photoshop Layers

Begin by opening up your business card template in Photoshop by going to File > Open. One of your most important tools is your Layers panel. Open it up by going to Window > Layers.

Here's a preview of what the Layers panel looks like.

Think of it like "looking under the hood" of your design document. Here, you can see where everything is. The content is "layered" on top of each other. When we select a layer, we can adjust that content independently from the rest of the design.

2. View Both Sides of Your Business Card At Once

You may also want to view both sides of your business card design at once. This can be helpful for making sure things stay visually cohesive. Remember, to open files, you'll want to go to File > Open. 

Undock your documents by dragging them away from the docked position. Simply click and drag from the top of the document where the name is displayed. Then resize and reposition these windows in any way you prefer. Here's an example of our sample design with the front and back side by side.

3. Import Your Business Card Imagery

Next, you'll likely want to import some unique imagery to use in your business card. Open up the imagery you'd like to use by going to File > New. 

Then, follow these steps:

  • Go to Select > All to select the entire image file. 
  • Go to Edit > Copy to copy your selected image.
  • Return to your business card template file.
  • Go to Edit > Paste to paste your image into your design template. Your image likely won't be the perfect size, by default!
  • Go to Edit > Transform > Free Transform. You'll see resize handles activated. Click and drag on them to resize your image to the size you prefer.

As an added bonus, I used a Clipping Mask in this example. Here's a look at my Layers panel.

I pasted the image above the existing, template image. Then, right click on PC or control click on Mac, and select Create Clipping Mask. This isolates where my image is visible to the area of the original stock image.

4. Edit Your Business Card Template Text

Editing text in Adobe Photoshop is simple. Turn to the Type tool in your Tools panel. It's selected and highlighted, in the example, below.

Take a look at the Layers panel. The layers with a "T" are Text Layers. You can double click on any text layer to edit it. Or, with the Type tool selected, simply click on any text to begin editing. You can then type, delete, and edit as you would in most desktop publishing software.

5. Adjust Layout Elements

You may want to move entire parts of your business card template. To do so, let's use the Move tool. It's selected in the example screenshot below.

This is where our Layers panel comes in handy again. Begin by selecting the layer containing the content you want to move. 

Then, with the Move tool active, click and drag to reposition your content in any place you prefer.

  • As we publish on a daily basis, we need to rely on our instructors to hit deadlines which are self-set. 

Desirable Skills

  • SEO knowledge! We do offer some basic training, but it's a bonus if you're already comfortable with SEO.
  • We'd love you to get in touch if you're fluent in German, Spanish, French, Russian, or Portuguese. Knowing more than one language is not essential, but it would be of interest. 
  • We're eager to get more video creators on our team. As we expand and create more content, we want to add more video content to our Envato Tuts+ YouTube channel (currently over 600k subscribers!).

How to Make a Crystal Effect in Photoshop

Today we'll be looking at how to make a quick and easy crystal texture Photoshop effect using nothing but a handful of Smart Filters! We'll also be creating a dreamy pastel color grade to pair with a gold foil frame design.

What You'll Need

To complete this project, you will need the following resources:

1. How to Create a Quick Background in Photoshop

Step 1

First, let's start with a new canvas filled with a pastel violet color #ddd9e8 using a Color fill layer. Turning that Color fill layer into a Smart Object by selecting the layer and Right-clicking > Convert to Smart Object.

Next, let's go to Filter > Camera Raw > Effects and add a Grain of 40-50 and a Vignetting of -10.

Now, we're going to use Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast to adjust the color. Set the Contrast to 100 and the Brightness to around 40.

2. How to Create a Pastel Gold Foil Design in Photoshop

Step 1

For our golden frame, we're going to chop and combine four different assets from the Zodiac Graphic Elements Kit, the first being Element 1.

Drag, drop, and center Element 1 onto the canvas. If it's not already a Smart Object, then Right-click > Convert to Smart Object.

Go to Layer > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast, setting it to around -60 Brightness and 45 Contrast.

Step 2

Now, using the Rectangular Marquee tool, select everything above the foreground mountains in the illustration.

Add a Layer Mask and then hit Control-I to Invert the Layer Mask!

We'll be doing some final masking here soon, so don't worry about masking too much or too little.

Step 3

Next, we're going to drag and drop the Virgo asset directly over the first element.

Hold Alt, and drag and drop the Brightness/Contrast Smart Filter from Element 1 onto the Virgo asset. And then one more time hold Alt, and drag and drop the Layer Mask from Element 1 onto the Virgo asset.

Hit Control-I to Invert the Layer Mask so that the two frames look like one.

Step 4

Now, let's drag and drop Element 17 onto the canvas. Enlarge it so that the stars fill in the horizontal space surrounding the golden frame.

Step 5

Hold Control and click the layer's icon to make a selection in the shape of the stars. And then Select > Modify > Contract by 15.

Add a Layer Mask, which will thin out the outline of the stars.

Step 6

Duplicate Element 17 to add even more stars, making sure to flip and rotate them so they don't look too repetitive.

Step 7

Let's Group all of our current gold elements, name the group Gold Foil, and then clip a New Layer into the group. Set the layer to Overlay and 50% Opacity.

And then, using a large soft round Brush set to white, let's paint some highlights on each corner of the frame. This will help sell the "gold foil" effect.

Step 8

Now, we're going to clean up our design by masking out any details we don't need. This includes the woman's legs, the inner stars, and parts of the mountains.

You can also always place your subject first, and then come back and mask if you are unsure what elements to mask or keep.

Step 9

In a new Group, above the Gold Foil group, drag and drop the Element 16 assets, which are gold foil mountains. Use these mountains to create a new mountain range on the gold foil design. 

Repeat the same steps as with the previous gold elements, including adding highlights and adjusting the Brightness/Contrast.

Step 10

Do one more round of masking to make sure the mountains and gold foil design match.

Also, create and clip a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer into the gold mountain group, bringing down the Saturation so that it better matches the rest of the design.

Step 11

We're going to finish up the gold design by dragging and dropping two images onto the canvas, below the gold design.

First, add the photo of a pastel sky, enlarging it significantly and adding a Blur Gallery blur of 67.

Step 12

Next, add pastel 23 from the "Pastel Blend - Gradient Backgrounds" texture pack. Make sure it fills the entire canvas and set its Layer Mode to Lighten at 48% Opacity.

Step 13

And finally, create a Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer set to -66 Brightness and 100 Contrast.

Step 14

Then we can group these three layers together and mask them so that they're confined to the shape of the gold design.

I used both the Pen and Brush tool, but you can use whatever method you'd prefer.

3. How to a Make Crystal Effect in Photoshop

Step 1

Let's place and extract our subject between the gold foil design group and the gold mountains group. We want her to look as if she's behind the mountains. 

I used Select Subject, added a Layer Mask, entered Select and Mask, and then hit the Refine Hair button for a super quick selection.

Again, use whatever your preferred method is!

Step 2

We're going to add some fast backlit hair by duplicating the subject, bringing the duplicate below the original, and then enlarging and flipping the duplicate.

Step 3

Now, we can create and Clip a pastel pink #ffe2f6 Color fill layer into the duplicated subject, masking out the rest of her body.

Step 4

Next, add some quick highlights and shadows using a mixture of Softlight and Overlay layers clipped into the subject.

Use a mixture of soft and hard round brushes to add white highlights to the hair, shoulder, and hand. Add some shadows to the inner parts of the subject's hoodie as well.

Step 5

With the subject done, we can finally add our Photoshop crystallize effect! If not already, make sure your subject is a Smart Object.

We'll be adding a total of four filters and adjustments, all added as Smart Filters.

Start with Filter > Pixelate > Crystalize, which will be the base for the diamond texture Photoshop effect. You'll want to play with the Cell Size. I ended up liking a size of 106.

Keep in mind, you can always come back and change this later, as all Smart Filters are adjustable.

Step 6

Second, Filter > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen, setting it to a 500 Amount and a 5.4 Radius. You'll want to make it sharp enough so that the edges of the previous filter appear to be outlined.

Step 7

Third, Image > Adjustments > Color Balance set to -100, 0, and +100, turning the crystal shapes blue.

And finally, Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast set to -20 Brightness and 100 Contrast.

Step 9

Now, let's select the Smart Filters layer mask, hit Control-I to Invert it, and then carve back in some crystal shapes.

I like to use a hard round Brush as it's quicker, but the Pen tool or the Polygonal Lasso tool will give you sharper edges, which is what you want.

This part can take a few minutes, so just focus on the shapes being created and take your time. I also went ahead and turned the lenses of the subject's sunglasses crystal as well.

Step 10

With your mask done, finish off the crystals by adding some highlights.

Create a new layer set to Overlay, and Clip it into the subject. Use the Polygonal Lasso tool or a hard round Brush to paint harsh white highlights on the sides of some of the crystals. Focus on the sides that would be catching and reflecting light.

Step 11

Brighten the crystal sunglasses by dragging and dropping another photo of a pastel sky onto the canvas, placing it over the subject's glasses and then setting it to Screen.

Step 12

Add a layer mask to the sky image, fill it with black using Control-I, and then mask back in so that the sky only appears inside the lenses.

4. How to Use 3D Objects in Photoshop

Step 1

Next up, let's add a bunch of smaller shards of crystal floating around our subject using just one Blue Crystal 3D asset.

We're going to do this by choosing View 3D Render, and then rotating and downloading the same crystal at multiple different angles. Download them as a layered PSD, so you can easily turn off the shadow layer.

Try and do at least five different angles so you have a bit of variety, though the more the better!

Step 2

With your crystals downloaded, scatter them around the canvas in different sizes, surrounding the subject.

Try to keep the flow of the image in mind, as well as facing the brighter surface of the crystal towards the light source, which is the subject in this case.

Once you're happy with your crystals, Group them all together, naming the group "Crystal Shards".

Step 3

Now, let's add some shine using an Inner Glow and an Outer Glow layer style.

Step 4

Next, we're going to clip a Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer into the Crystal Shards group. Set it to 99 Brightness.

Step 5

We'll be finishing up the crystals by clipping both a Lighten and Screen layer into the shards group.

Then, using a large soft round Brush set to a hot pink dd64b5 color and a low Flow Rate, let's paint an iridescent glow onto the crystal shards.

Aim to create soft blooms of pink inside the crystals. We don't want them to be solid pink, only partially.

The Screen layer will brighten, while the Lighten layer will give you that inner glow effect.

5. How to Create Pastel Highlights in Photoshop

Step 1

Let's add a final glow by duplicating our Pastel Background group, bringing it above all current layers, deleting the current layer mask, and setting the group to Lighten at 60% Opacity.

Step 2

Now, let's add a Layer Mask, Invert it using Control I, and then mask back in some pastel glow around the subject's hair and body.

Use a soft round Brush set to a low Flow Rate so you can build the glow up slowly.

Step 3

Finally, create a Curves layer and bring up the Highlights Anchor.

Double-click the Curves layer and adjust the Blend If settings so that the layer only affects the highlights.

Set the toggles to something like you see below, though these settings will change depending on the subject's skin tone and the overall image brightness.

Step 4

Now, we can enhance the highlights of the image by masking in areas with a soft round white Brush.

The Blend If settings should keep the lighting out of the shadows, with only the brightest portion of the subject's face, hair, and body being affected, along with any other areas you want to brighten in the image.

6. How to Create a Pastel Color Grade

Step 1

Let's give one last wash of pastel blues to the whole image, starting with a Color Lookup layer set to HorrorBlue, with a Layer Mode of Color, and an Opacity of 25%.

Next, add a Selective Color layer with the following settings.
