Just a quick note, this article primarily references the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. The 6K takes the same batteries as the 4K, but the 6K Pro takes the larger NP-F570 batteries. How to Effectively Power Your BMPCC Removable Batteries The BMPCC range comes with a removable battery, a standard LP-E6 like Canon use. The problem with this alone is that it affords you very little filming time, particularly at higher resolutions. You'd get somewhere in the region of 20-40 minutes of shooting in Full HD. Users of third-party LP-E6 batteries have reported that you get even less time out of them (some report a huge 75% drop in efficiency), so if buying extra batteries is your preferred option then go with a trusted brand like Canon or go via Blackmagic's site for trusted suppliers. We once made the mistake of buying cheaper third-party batteries and we discovered that, as the saying goes, 'buy cheap, pay twice.' The grip for the 6K Pro is slightly different in that it fixes directly to the bottom of the camera, without the need to plug into the battery slot, and it takes two NP-F570 batteries with around three hours of use per charge. A battery grip for the 4K/6K will set you back £185—£250 plus around £150 each for (branded) batteries. Update Your Firmware Keeping your camera's firmware up to date is wise anyway, but can also have unexpected benefits, battery issues being one of the ones of recent years. In the 6.1 version of the Blackmagic Camera Setup Software the update addressed power issues like the camera shutting off without warning while there's still power in the battery, sometimes as much as 40% which obviously is a significant difference in battery efficiency. Gimbal Most professional gimbals will power the majority of popular cameras on the market. We use a Gudsen Moza Air 2 which boasts up to 16 hours of battery life with four Li-ion 18650 batteries. While I assume that that's dependant on how you're using your camera, we've not yet run out of power using it but it would be easy to have a spare set of batteries on hand if you were planning on particularly heavy usage and were unsure. V-Lock Battery Blackmagic doesn't really tout a V-Lock (or V-Mount) battery as one of the powering options on their site, but for us it's been the best and most cost-effective solution. Many people report getting over five hours of on-off shooting with the V-Lock and while we've never needed to use it for that long, we've certainly had over three hours with no issues. V-Lock Battery on the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K Adding a V-Lock battery is a little less straightforward than other methods and there's no one agreed upon way, but once it's on it's pretty solid. It uses an adapter that looks like a dummy battery that goes into your battery slot in the same way as a battery grip would. You can also plug it into the 12v input instead of the dummy adapter. A quick release plate attached to the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K We mount our V-Lock underneath the camera as the majority of work we do is on a tripod or gimbal so it's easier to mount it directly onto the tripod and also simple to take off if we need to put the camera on the gimbal. Those who use shoulder mounts tend to favour having the battery behind the camera on the shoulder mount to help with balance, but the pitfall of that is it can block the screen. It's less of a problem if you then use an external monitor, but remember you'll likely still need the monitor's touch controls. A V-Lock battery attached to the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K with a quick release plate underneath We have the quick release plate for the tripod permanently mounted on the bottom of the battery and a quick release plate shoe mounted on the top of the battery, with a quick release plate on the bottom of the camera, so it can slide on and off. The V-Mount itself is on the bottom of the quick release shoe – this is so the camera stays the same for going on gimbal without the bottom needing to be unscrewed each time. A V-Lock battery costs around £250 but they vary quite a bit in price and in style and design, so you'll need to find the right brand to fit your camera. AC Power Plus USB-C Input The BMPCC includes an AC plug so you can charge the batteries while you shoot if you're staying in one place with access to power, effectively running off the mains. There's also the USB-C port that you can connect to a power source like a power bank or laptop, though the charging function will be slower than when connected to mains. It's really important that before you plug any power source into your camera (or anything, really!) that you check the voltage is compatible, because it's entirely possible to fry it, and people have. If you're unsure whether a power source is okay to use with your camera, you can contact Blackmagic and ask, they're pretty good at getting back to you and letting you know if it'll be okay. Happy Filming Let's face it, the standard battery is nobody's favourite way of powering their Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, but thankfully there are a lot of good alternatives that you can research and choose based on your particular needs and setup. How to Sync Audio and Video Tracks in DaVinci Resolve Posted: 28 Aug 2021 07:00 AM PDT In our last tutorial on working with audio in DaVinci Resolve we covered how to use Fairlights's auto sync features. The auto sync is great, in this tutorial you'll learn how to manually sync video clips to audio that's been recorded externally from the camera, and why you might want to do that. Recording Audio Separately From Video and Off Your Camera They're a few good reasons to record your audio externally from your camera. The first is that you likely want to move your microphone closer to the source than the camera, and running a long cable is not always possible.  The big benefit from onboard sound is a smaller setup, and you get and perfectly synced audio with zero fuss. However, it's the microphone that's built into your camera ranges from basically decent quality in a very controlled environment to not really usable in the real world. Most cameras these days have a 2.5mm, 3.5mm, or XLR jack that you could attach a good shotgun mic to, and some of these are great, but they have their limitations. External recorders—even if it's just the onboard microphones in a decent pocket recorder that you can physically move closer—often give you the best balance of higher quality audio files and flexibility with your mic placement. Blogger adjusting a small accessory microphone on camera The Clapboard Being able to manually sync your audio is more about prep work than it is about editing software. Regardless of the NLE you're using, these tips will help you get your audio and video aligned.  Picture this: you're filming multiple takes, with your audio tracks being recorded separately. Each take is a new file to keep track of that needs to be later lined up in post. Renaming files on the fly is either not possible or is total time suck. This can quickly become overwhelming. Enter the clapboard.  Hands holding clapper board on yellow background The clapboard is the perfect tool to keep your production organized. The photo above is pretty bang on in terms of the placement in your shot. The information should be easy to read and take up the most of the frame. All it takes is to have your recorder and camera rolling and to follow these steps: Place the clapper in centre frame Make sure to record about three to five seconds of silence before and after you drop the clapper—this will give you a very visible spike in your audio and a clear visual reference to match in post. Using the clapper is pretty easy. Fancy ones have timecode and digital readouts, wi-fi, bluetooth and apps, but a simple and inexpensive clapper that is durable, legible, and cleans up neatly is enough to improve most small productions. Do you really need to go out and get a clapboard to sync audio? Not really, a hand clap will work just fine. High Five's For The Win A Cost Saving Alternative You will not record some details, but if your project is small, let's say a one-shot talking-head interview, a hand clap will get the job done. I recommend stepping out of the frame while keeping your hands the main focus. Keep your arms and hands rigid and try to do your best alligator clap with your thumbs pointing directly towards the lens on contact. This makes the visual much clearer than if you cupped your hands or turned your clap away. Manually Synching Your Footage on the Timeline (No Timecode) Once you start giving your audio and video a reference, manually synching the tracks n the timeline becomes a breeze. No more endless searching for starting points, and because of the silence before and after the clap, you'll see a clear spike in the audio. The goal is to match this clack with the video clip. Here are a few tips. Align With Scratch Track Some external audio workflows save high quality files to the audio recorder and a rough mix or "scratch" version to the camera. If you know your audio and video clips match, you can select the video clip (with the scratch audio) and replacement audio clip, right-click and select Auto Align. This only works if you have scratch audio because it works by matching the .wav audio forms. First Contact Because the clacker is moving so quick, you'll likely have two or three frames that look like there is first contact. Finding the exact moment is made much easier by stretching your timeline and using the arrow keys to scrub frame by frame. Link Clips Now that you've found the starting points, you can link the clips so that they become locked together in sync. Select the clips, right-click and choose Link Clips. This can be done in either the Edit or Fairlight tabs in Resolve. Then, clean up the timeline using the razor tool and trim up your clips. Try Audio Auto Sync in Resolve Thanks for learning with us! But, when you download design PPTs, you don't give up the ability to customize. Templates are just a starting point.  In this section, let's walk through a comprehensive slide customization using a premium template. You'll see that it's easy to totally a premium PowerPoint template to match your purpose. 1. Select a Slide Use a SWOT slide to show the four key pillars of a strategic review. Let's work with slide 20, a SWOT slide from the premium Untouch template on Envato Elements. Remember that Elements let you download design PPTs, all for a flat rate. With a SWOT slide, you focus on four elements of a review:  strengths weaknesses opportunities threats Consider each of these four pillars in business settings. Trim the Slide For a cleaner slide, I removed the circular icons just above the SWOT triangles. Less is more when designing slides. In most presentations that I work on when teaching PowerPoint, I remove unneeded elements. In this case, I clicked on and deleted the circles with icons. They feel somewhat redundant, so I simply clicked and deleted them. Philosophically, I like slide PPTs with fewer elements. I find that audiences can focus more easily when there are fewer objects. More importantly, I want to make room for bullet points. More on that below. 3. Re-Color to Match Your Brand Click on shapes, then choose Format > Shape Fill to choose your colors. There are built-in color schemes on every slide PPT. But you might want to match these premium PowerPoint templates to your color palette. In our case, let's recolor the triangles. Click on the shapes, then go to the Format > Shape Fill drop-down. Choose a new color from the options (or More Fill Colors) and watch your shapes transform. Just repeat this process with any shape you want to recolor. 4. Adjust Slide Master Elements Sometimes, you'll click on objects on a slide PPT, but PowerPoint won't let you select them. Why is this? This is because these elements are on the Slide Master, a layer that sits below the slide and controls many slides. In our example, that includes the company name (lower right corner) and the color swatch in the upper right corner. Go to the View > Slide Master menu, and then you can edit both of these. Go to the View > Slide Master option to adjust the color swatch in the corner and the company name on the slide. Add Bullet Points The finished slide has everything we need for a successful SWOT. To round out our slide, I'll make two more changes: I'll shift the text boxes from beneath the SWOT triangles to above them.
