Sometimes changing things or even not changing them properly can result in errors on a website. In this post, we will learn what is a 403 Forbidden error and how to fix it quickly. What Does a 403 Forbidden Error Mean? Requests that you make to a server can return a variety of status codes. One such status code is the 403. The 403 forbidden error basically means that the server understands your request but it is denying access to a certain resource on your website to users. It is up to servers to provide more information about the reason for forbidding the request. What Can Cause a 403 Forbidden Error? There are many things that can cause a 403 error. However, the three most common reasons that can result in a 403 error are: a corrupted .htaccess file incorrect file permissions installed plugins You should consider reading our post about understanding and configuring .htaccess file in WordPress if you aren't already familiar with it. In short, the .htaccess file is used by Apache web servers to determine how they should serve files to visitors. Any errors in the file can therefore stop the website from functioning. WordPress Understanding and Configuring the .htaccess File in WordPress Monty Shokeen Incorrect file permissions are another reason that can cause a 403 error. Files and directories on computer systems have a certain permissions assigned to them. This prevents people from reading, writing or executing a file they don't have access too. It is important to keep sensitive files protected, but files and directories that are part of WordPress need permissions assigned to them in such a way that they meet the minimum basic requirements. Fixing a 403 Forbidden Error In this section, we will learn how to fix the 403 forbidden error either by restoring our .htaccess file setting up proper file permissions. Fixing a Corrupt .htaccess File The .htaccess file in your WordPress installation can be modified in three different ways. Sometimes, it is modified by the WordPress core and other times some plugins make changes to this file. It is also possible that you might have manually made same changes to this file. In any case, the most beginner-friendly way to get rid of a 403 error due to an .htaccess file is to remove the old version and force WordPress to create a new one. Make sure that you take a fresh backup of the old .htaccess file before you remove it. Save it locally on your computer or somewhere else. If generating a new .htaccess file doesn't resolve the error, you could just re-upload the fresh backup and move on to the next step. You should see an .htaccess file once you have logged in to the root directory of your website on your FTP client. Right click on it to first download a local copy and then delete the file. Try visiting your website now. If it opens properly, this means that some rule inside the .htaccess file was causing the error. In this case, you can generate a new .htaccess file by simply going to WordPress Admin dashboard and then navigating to Settings > Permalinks and then clicking on Save Changes. Setting Correct File Permissions Specifying the right value for file permissions allows you to keep your website secure while still being able to provide access to users who need it to keep everything running smoothly. The general rule to keep in mind is to start with restrictive permissions and then relax them until things start working. Luckily, we don't need to do all these tests to figure out the right permissions for our WordPress website. Within your WordPress installation, you can set the permissions for all directories to 755 and the permissions for all files to 644. This should take care of any 403 errors arising out of incorrect file permissions. The meaning of permissions numbers like 755 is explained in more detail in the official WordPress documentation. There are free FTP clients like FileZilla or WinSCP that you can use to set these permissions for different files and directories recursively. You can check the current permissions of a file or directory by right clicking on its name and then selecting File Permissions from the context menu. This should open up a dialog box which will show you the currently applied permissions and ask if you want to apply them recursively to different files and sub-directories. Disable All Plugins Creating a new .htaccess file or properly setting up file permissions fixes the 403 forbidden error issue for majority of users. One more things that you can try in the unlikely scenario that you are still getting the error is to disable all the plugins. A poorly coded plugin or incompatibility between different plugins among other things can also result in 403 errors. Once all the plugins have been disabled, check if the website still returns a 403 error. If the website is loading now, this means that one of the plugins is causing the 403 forbidden error. Now start activating the plugins one-by-one to see when the error happens again. This will tell you which plugin is causing problems and you can contact its developers to fix the issue or install an alternative plugin in its place. The Different Types of Serif Fonts With Serif Font Examples Posted: 26 Aug 2021 08:00 AM PDT What are the different types of serif fonts and why should you know them? In this tutorial, we'll look at types of serif typefaces and explain the ins and outs with serif font examples. Learn how to identify different types of serifs and download some fresh, new modern serif fonts today. This modern serif font is available for download on Envato Elements. What Is a Serif Font? So, what is a serif font anyway? Let's begin by defining the serif. Take a look at this visual example. Times New Roman is a serif typeface. Helvetica, on the other hand, is a sans serif typeface.  Note the circled areas in each example. Times New Roman has serifs. They're an added stroke or line at the end of a letter. Helvetica, on the other hand, has abrupt ends with no serifs. It is a sans serif. The "sans" is in reference to not having a serif. Times New Roman is a serif typeface, and Helvetica is a sans serif typeface. But serif fonts come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and styles. There are slab serif fonts, hairline serif fonts, handwritten serif font designs, and so much more. However, this general distinction is likely one of the most common means of describing a font: either it's a serif or a sans serif. Script fonts are sometimes considered "the third type", but keep in mind that the "serif or sans serif" clarification could still apply. What Is Type Classification? What are the different types of serif fonts? Well, type classification is a big part of that answer. It's a system of identifying fonts based on their visual criteria. Some of this has historical context, but it all has practical use. Modern type design often takes inspiration from more than one classification. So, why bother learning about types of serif typefaces? A font is just a font, right? Just choose one that looks good! Well, as many experienced designers would likely say: it's a little more complicated than that.  If you know how to identify a font's characteristics, it's easier to identify the font. Identifying a font makes it easier to pick just the right typeface for your projects. No taking a shot in the dark; you'll have an idea of what aesthetic to start with. Type can be very visually communicative. Your choices contribute to your design's narrative.  The Different Types of Serif Fonts Here's a quick overview of four of the different types of serif fonts: old style, transitional, Didone, and slab. Note the circled serif in each example. An example of old style, transitional, Didone, and slab serif fonts. But you'll notice that there's more to these fonts than just the serif. For example, Didot, a Didone typeface, has really stark contrast. This means that one line is quite thin, while the other is quite thick. Rockwell, the slab serif, has consistent lines with little to no contrast.  You might also find yourself asking this question: what if a serif font doesn't neatly fit into these aesthetic qualities? They don't have to! Many modern serif fonts mix, match, and break the rules. However, it's often a good idea to "know the rules" so you can more effectively "break them". Check out this example. It has serifs, but it has some mixed inspiration. Many modern serif fonts "break the rules" and take plenty of creative inspiration from multiple sources and aesthetics. Before we get ahead of ourselves, let's take a look at some of the different types of serif fonts you should know. Old-Style Serif Fonts Old-style serifs tend to have a rather drawn or calligraphic quality. Remember the serifs in Garamond? Note the serifs in the lower case "d", in the example below. Old style fonts also typically have diagonal stress, unlike the Transitionals, which tend to be more upright. Check out this example. Check out this example font, which takes inspiration from the Didones. Contrast refers to how some of the lines are quite thin, and they're paired with lines that are very thick. The uppercase "N" here is a great example. Again, note the hairline serifs; they are very thin. This beautifully designed Didone serif font is an elegant choice. Fonts 34 Best Modern Didone Typefaces (Fonts Similar to Bodoni & Didot) Daisy Ein Slab Serif Fonts Slab serifs look a lot like how they sound. This time, we're not seeing that contrast. Instead, we see thick serifs and continuous line width. Slab serifs are quite popular in modern serif font design. They often make a great choice for headlines, titles, logos, and much more. Now that we've had a look at the different types of serifs, let's observe some rule breaking and outliers. There are a number of awesome, elegant serif fonts out there that don't neatly fit into these categories, but still use some of the same ideas. For example, check out this decorative display type. It has serifs, but they're distinctly decorative, and they add to the overall magical, mystical look. This decorative display serif font has serifs, but doesn't neatly fit into our categories. Other Serif Terms: Hairline Serif The term hairline serif refers to the width of the font's serif. In this case, hairline is in regards to a thin serif. Check out this example, below. You'll often see hairline serifs in typefaces that take inspiration from the Didone type classification. This elegant serif font has very thin serifs, or hairline serifs. Other Serif Terms: Wedge Serif Wedge serifs, on the other hand, are as they sound. They taper in a wedge-like shape. The example below is a very exaggerated one. In this case, we have some serifs that almost look like triangles. It doesn't have to be this intense; just keep that taper in mind. This ultra-high-contrast typeface is an elegant wedge serif font. Other Serif Terms: Condensed Serif Font You might also see the term "condensed" associated with serif fonts. However, "condensed" can refer to many different fonts, serif or sans serif. This is a case where the font has less width and more height, to a point where it is a key visual aspect of the font's design. Check out this example. This condensed serif font has a smaller width and greater height. Rounded Serif Font  Let's also take a look at a rounded serif font. Rounded serifs can make for such a fun aesthetic. You'll often see this look associated with retro typefaces, like a look from the 70s. The key here is that the serif itself is rounded. Note that they're there, in this example below, but they have a distinct, rounded edge. Note the rounded serifs in this rounded serif font. It really affects the overall aesthetic. Mixed and Modern Serif Fonts As mentioned earlier, fonts aren't required to strictly fit into any of these terms or categories, especially in modern font design. In fact, sometimes a look becomes so popular or trendy that it might start a whole new genre!  Here's a look at a font that doesn't quite fit any one category. It is, however, a serif font, as it has visible serifs that contribute to the overall aesthetic.  This modern serif font incorporates many visually engaging concepts in its design. Handwriting fonts can also have serifs. Here's an example of a playful, decorative handwriting font that also has chunky serifs. This font doesn't quite fit the mold when we look at our other categories. It's a decorative display font.  This handwritten serif font incorporates fun, decorative elements into its design. Then, on the other hand, sometimes we get fonts that mix across categories. Take a look at this beautiful serif font. It has lovely, sweeping lines and swirls. It looks as if someone mixed calligraphy with a serif font, doesn't it?  There are swirls and calligraphic elements incorporated into this modern serif font. Serifs don't necessarily have rules. Notice how these serifs are waved to create a nautical look. It rather looks like something from a retro tattoo. Still, it's a serif font; it has those serifs at the end of the letterform.  This nautical serif font has decorative serifs that match the sea-inspired theme. Here's another example that draws some other inspiration. There's a touch of Blackletter design here to create this vintage font look. It's ornate, and there are so many beautiful details. Still, this font has serifs with a slight wedge.  This vintage serif font has mixed visual inspiration. As a manager, you can't cajole people into smiling or just tell them to be more positive. Why a Positive Work Environment Is Important Before we get into the specifics of creating a positive work environment, let's look at the benefits. The science is clear on this: a more positive work environment leads to greater productivity. What Makes a Positive Work Environment Now that we've seen why creating a positive work environment is important, let's look at how to achieve that. In this section, you'll discover 12 techniques for fostering a positive work environment in which your employees feel happy, valued, and fully engaged. 1. Improve the Physical Workspace  What colour temperature is your office lighting? It's OK if you don't know—it's not something that most business owners think about. But research has shown that cooler light makes people more productive, while warmer light makes them feel more comfortable and relaxed. So consider having cooler light in the main workspace, and warmer light in breakout rooms or cafeterias. You can achieve cooler light either by increasing the amount of natural light or by installing special "blue-enriched" light bulbs, while warmer light comes from orange or yellow bulbs. Also consider things like air quality—are your air conditioning or heating systems regularly checked, and are the filters cleaned? Poor air quality can affect concentration and reduce energy levels. 2. Provide Employee-Friendly Facilities  As well as fixing the main working environment, also consider providing facilities aimed at improving wellbeing. For example, you could offer childcare, a gym, yoga classes, healthy food and drink, etc.  You may be thinking that those things sound expensive, but you can implement some of them even on small budgets. Even if you can't stretch to a fully equipped gym, for instance, you could take a meeting room and fit it with exercise mats and some basic equipment at low cost. You may even have someone on staff who can lead yoga or meditation classes at lunchtime, or you could hire someone without breaking the bank. What's important isn't having state-of-the-art equipment, but showing that you care about your employees as human beings, not just instruments of production, and doing your best to provide facilities that promote their wellbeing.  3. Grant Autonomy  One of the best ways to create a positive working environment is to give your workers autonomy. Avoid micromanaging them, and instead allow them some space and freedom to make decisions, contribute ideas, manage their own workload, and work without constant supervision. The result will be happier, more engaged employees who contribute to a more positive workplace. Want some evidence for that? A study of 20,000 workers over two years found that those with more autonomy experienced greater job satisfaction and wellbeing. You may need to make this change gradually. If people have become accustomed to close supervision, a sudden shift to complete autonomy could cause confusion and a loss of morale. But if you gradually loosen the reins and allow people to take more responsibility for how they do their own jobs, you'll see a positive impact on the workplace culture. 4.
