How to Start Your Own Online Store (Beginner Guide)

Posted: 07 Jul 2021 06:35 AM PDT

Setting up an online store years ago used to be mind-numbingly complex.

Simply creating products, product pages and a checkout sequence was bad enough. But then you had to worry about payment gateways to accept payment. Shipping. And don't forget about taxes!

Thankfully that's changed over the past few years, and it's never been easier to get your first online store up-and-running.

We'll not only show you how to start your own online store in this guide, but you'll also be able to get online-and-selling in less than a day. Here's how.

1. Get Started: First Research Market Demand and Product Fit

There are typically two ways you get started selling products online.

The first is to start with your initial idea or product. Chances are, you already know what you want to sell and the objective is to instead figure out (a) where your audience is and (b) how to sell to them online.

The other is to reverse engineer the process. In this case, you start with a profitable niche first, and then back out to find the right product to sell. While obviously less common, it's still a good exercise if you're trying to gauge possible demand before investing a lot of time and money into an unproven product.

Step 1. Measure Market Demand

The best thing about online businesses is that you can test before sinking money into the unknown.

That means you can see if there are already buyers first, by spending maybe $100 on ads, prior to investing 10 times that much into new product creation.

One of the simplest ways is to check out Google Trends. Here you can search for specific types of products to see how it has been covered or how many people have been looking for it over the last few months or years. If you were considering selling gluten free beer for example, you can see how its popularity has increased over time or dig into the data annually to look for trends.

Gluten Free Beer Rise in PopularityGluten Free Beer Rise in PopularityGluten Free Beer Rise in Popularity
Gluten free beer rise in popularity, results in Google Trends.

You'll also be able to see where this interesting regional growth is happening, which is important if you're shipping physical products or goods. As Google Trends indicates, we see that gluten free beer is not only popular in the US, but also in Australia.

SEMrush is another great research tool, helping you to quickly determine what the general organic search (SEO) volume is and whether there's any Google Ads competition or not.

Gluten free beer resuls in SEMrushGluten free beer resuls in SEMrushGluten free beer resuls in SEMrush
SEMrush search results, showing organic data for gluten free beer searches.
  1. Organic Search: What is the total volume (or interest and demand) in this keyphrase?
  2. Paid Search: Are people currently bidding on this phrase, and what's the estimated CPC so far?
  3. Trend: Is this keyphrase trending towards growth or decline?

Contrary to popular belief, no advertising and no SEO competition (i.e. the sign of no customers) is a very bad sign. It means there's no market too.

However, you obviously wouldn't want to jump in the deep end either, trying to outbid some of the most competitive (and expensive) markets.

Step 2. Find Pre-Made Products

If you're still unsure of exactly which products you'd like to start selling (or investing in the creation of), start browsing a large affiliate network that's already filled with hundreds to thousands of them.

ClickBank, ShareASale, and CJ (formerly Commission Junction) are three of the biggest affiliate networks with tons of products readily available.

CJ Affiliate NetworkCJ Affiliate NetworkCJ Affiliate Network
CJ Affiliate Network

Many other large websites that sell their own products will have their own affiliate networks too. For example, Bodybuilding.com is primarily known for all of their excellent fitness content. However they make money on supplement sales primarily. You can become an affiliate quickly and tap their large network of credible products. These links are typically in the site's footer if they have a program.

Bodybuildingcom - AffiliatesBodybuildingcom - AffiliatesBodybuildingcom - Affiliates

The best part about affiliate networks is that a lot of the hard work is already taken care of. The products are proven. The checkout and shipping methods are reliable (and handled by somebody else). You just have to help sell it (and you get a cut of the revenues for your trouble).

Another nascent, but growing option includes products using Amazon Fulfillment. Some savvy first-time e-retailers are turning to it as a simple, all-in-one solution for getting products sold to the masses, without having to deal with a lot of the headaches around shipping around the country (or world).

2. Set Up Your First Online Store Right

Setting up an online store used to be difficult. Not anymore. Here's how to your first online store running in no time. You have three primary options when setting up an online eCommerce store.

Option 1: Magento

The industry standard. The most customization options for the largest sites. However, it's also the least user-friendly by far.

We have a plethora of available Magento themes ready for customization. Although if you're not technical, you may need help setting it up and customizing to your liking.

For example, Porto is a contemporary Magento theme that comes with 18 different homepage styles. It's one of the top rated themes available on Envato Market, with over 629 reviews and over 6,000 sales

Option 2: WordPress (WooCommerce)

WordPress provides a good mix of custom flexibility and user friendliness. A decent middle of the road option if both are important. WooCommerce powers the vast majority of WordPress eCommerce sites.

Check out our marketplace of WooCommerce-enabled themes to quickly get something that looks beautiful. Or, browse through our theme showcase, learn how to set up a new theme, and dig into our course on the basics of working with WooCommerce

Savoy is a modern and minimal WooCommerce powered storefront that features a beautiful AJAX-powered product search.

Option 3: Shopify

The most user-friendly by far. Perfect for smaller or relatively simple websites. Their stores come 'pre-built' with many handy options like Shopify Payments so you don't have to worry about setting up a third party option.

Although Shopify typically offers the least customizations of the three options, you can still get a beautiful, new Shopify theme from our library or browse through our best themes below:

For example, Ella will take your standard Shopify site and turn it into a contemporary powerhouse that looks far more expensive than it actually cost to put together.

New eCommerce Website Trends to Follow

As websites have evolved over the past few years, consumers have new expectations and increased standards that they're used to seeing when browsing websites. Here are a few new eCommerce trends you'll want to explore and considering adding to your site:

  1. Responsive Website: Shoppers today are used to finding products on their mobile devices, adding products to their carts on tablets, and then purchasing on their desktop. That means your website needs to be fully responsive to accomodate this multi device shopping. (Don't worry, this comes standard on all of our themes in our marketplace and especially the ones listed above.)
  2. Product Videos: There's no better way to increase product credibility than showing a video of it in context and highlighting the benefits. A whopping 73% more people will purchase if there's a product video (compared with when there isn't).
  3. Personalization: The biggest online retailers like Amazon are now tailoring their website based on what people searched for or purchased in the past. Incorporating an area to 'Recommend' products can help your store stand out.
  4. Product Demonstrations: Sometimes it's easier to show, than tell. Especially with complex or highly visual products. For example, Evodesk does an awesome job showing you how product customizations change the look and feel in real time.

3. Plan Your Marketing and Sales Strategy

You've tested the market. Found the right products. Set up a beautiful looking store and incorporated some of the latest features that today's experienced shoppers demand.

Now all that's left is to launch and start driving sales.

At this point, it's easy (and convenient) to think that SEO will magically start bringing in sales to your new website. Unfortunately, that won't happen anytime soon.

Instead, you're better off choosing one of these following ways to begin your marketing with.

Step 1. Pursue Influencer Referrals

Your early sales are going to come through other people recommending your products to their groups of people.

These can be journalists or bloggers that write for large media sites. They might be large product companies that can carry your stuff. Or they might just be regular individuals that can refer your products to communities and groups of potential customers.

For example, one of the easiest ways to get started is to look for bloggers in your niche who already regularly review products like yours. Use advanced Google operators like to narrow your search.

Or you can get extra sneaky by using Moz Open Site Explorer to look at all the people currently linking back to your competition to find the sites reviewing them that you haven't yet.

Moz Open Site ExplorerMoz Open Site ExplorerMoz Open Site Explorer
Moz Open Site Explorer - example.

Another tip is to potentially partner with content-driven sites that are constantly looking for interesting content. In this case, you want to create engaging, interesting stuff while also potentially featuring your product (think trojan horse, where you can slip in subtle product placement-style messages).

One way to find these is by Google operators like 'inurl':

Google inurl operatorGoogle inurl operatorGoogle inurl operator
Google inurl operator example

For example, Primally Pure does a great job in this guest post by keeping the focus of the article on a bigger topic of interest or pain point for the audience.

In-post product promotion exampleIn-post product promotion exampleIn-post product promotion example
In-post product promotion example - source.

A final example is to join the affiliate networks mentioned earlier, but this time to allow others to sell your products for you. Or you can look for specific partners who might cater to the same audience and would be willing to help promote your work for a share of the revenue.

Step 2. Start Your Initial Advertising Campaigns

Many small or first-time business owners are under the impression that advertising is 'too expensive'. However that's not always the case.

For example, remarketing ad campaigns (the ones that follow people around after they've visited your site) can dramatically increase ROI despite not costing that much at all.

In this case, you're targeting people that have already visited your website (or flipped through your products), so the audience targeting is very defined and specific.

These can be setup through Google's Ads or Facebook through their powerful Dynamic Product Ads. Facebook's option can even be customized further, letting you setup a basic 'template' to start with that pulls in data based on exactly the same products people viewed on your site.

Are You Ready to Start Your Own Online Store?

Setting up your first eCommerce store years ago required developers, thousands of dollars, and a number of months of development. Today, you can have one up-and-running by the end of the night within $100 in many cases.

Not only that, but it will look every bit as custom and beautiful with the high-quality themes available. All of which are fully responsive, adapting seamlessly to any device. And they've figured out the most difficult aspects such as payment gateway integration, shipping, taxes and more.

Starting an online store is no longer the hard part. Instead, it's about taking the first few steps of properly researching your potential customers, and then executing a proactive action plan to promote your products.

So, you've found the perfect InDesign proposal template. What's next?

Or maybe you're looking to create a proposal template from scratch. But you're not quite sure of some of the basics. Let's look at some quick tips to get you started.

In this demonstration, we'll use the following InDesign proposal template. You're welcome to download it and work along with this walkthrough. Or use an InDesign template or design of your own.

Let's get started:

1. Browse and Sort Pages With the Pages Panel

One of the most important basics in InDesign is the use of pages. This refers to the pages in your document. From here, we can add pages, sort pages, and delete them too. We do this from the Pages Panel.

If you don't see the Pages Panel, go to View > Pages, at the top of the software.

We see thumbnail previews of our pages, in this panel. Double click on one to navigate to that page. You can also click and drag to rearrange your pages. Right click on any page and select Duplicate Page to make a copy of it.

2. Place Images Into Your InDesign Template

Let's say you're working with an InDesign template. You'll likely want to place images into the template's placeholders. To do so, start by selecting the given placeholder using the Selection Tool, as shown below.

Then, go to File > Place, at the top of your software. You'll then be prompted to select an image file from your computer. Select it, and then click OK to place the file into your layout design.

The result is shown below. The stock image has been inserted into one of the placeholder shapes.

3. Experiment and Change Your Colors

But what if you'd like to change some colors? That's a simple process, too.

In the example below, we see some colored shapes. These all have a Fill Color—think of the Fill Color as the color within a shape or frame, within Adobe InDesign. For reference, the Stroke Color is more like an outline around these spaces.

In the Tools Panel, the Fill Color is highlighted below. With the shape in question selected, click on the Fill Color to change the color. The outlined color, "behind" the Fill in this example, is the Stroke Color.

Fill Color InDesignFill Color InDesignFill Color InDesign

4. Add and Adjust your Type

Another essential is the type within your document. Just about every InDesign proposal template is going to have type in it!

Edit existing type within your document using the Type Tool. It's selected in the example, shown below.

Then, select the Type Tool. Simply click on a Text Box (the rectangular container holding the type) to edit the text inside it. To create a new Text Box, click and drag with the Type Tool selected.

We can also alter our type using the Character Panel. Notice how, shown below, we can edit things like our font and size here. If you don't see the Character Panel, go to Window > Type & Tables > Character, to open it up.

5. Adjust and Move Layout Components

But maybe you want to entirely mix up your layouts. Move something around, or maybe make a custom layout, out of an existing one. Use your Selection Tool to select part of your layout. In the example below, a Text Box containing a paragraph is selected.

Now, I can click and drag to reposition it anywhere on the page. You can also use the arrow keys, on your keyboard, to nudge the position of the content.

Move and adjust parts of your layout freely, to craft the perfect layout design for your project.

5 Creative InDesign Business Proposal Tips for 2021

Creating and customizing the perfect InDesign project proposal template can be a challenge. We need to find a balance between creative and interesting visual solutions. The content needs to be easy to read and user friendly.

Here are five design tips to help you take your InDesign business proposal template from good to great.

1. Visual Consistency Helps Create a Unified Presentation

Think of your InDesign project proposal template as one, continuous presentation. Each page should look related. Take a moment to imagine the opposite. If every page looked dramatically different, your presentation would look confusing. It would look disjointed and disconnected.

Instead, your proposal should look and feel like one, fluid experience. Think of it like a movie: if the tone shifted or the characters didn't have an arc, it would seem strange. Your business plan InDesign template can take a similar approach. Look at it as one, continuous story, all with one goal.

2. Consistency Doesn't Have to Be Boring!

A great InDesign proposal template isn't necessarily a collection of repeating pages. If every page looked the same, it wouldn't be very interesting, would it?

Find a balance between consistency and variety. For example, look at the premium InDesign business proposal template below.

There's twenty pages included in the template, and each two page spread is visually different. There's different use of color. Not the different arrangement of layout elements, and different placement of imagery. But the pages still look related—why?

We can take key elements and use them as a visual anchor. A great example, like we see below, is color. Notice that the color scheme is consistent. The font choices are consistent too.

3. Use Imagery to Your Advantage

A strong business plan InDesign template incorporates imagery. But it does so in a strategic and communicative way. Strong image choices do more than just "look good". They should also support your narrative—both on the individual page and the entire proposal itself.

For example, do you plan to introduce your team in your business proposal? This can be a great way to further connect with your target audience: let them know who you and your team are! Let them get to know you. Putting a face to the names is even more humanizing.

Don't just use any old pictures though. The images should be professional, just like you'd expect at a job interview.

The premium template below is a great example. We see pictures of involved parties. We also see supplemental imagery that supports the ideas on the page.

4. Make the Most of Your Proposal Template InDesign File

Remember, an InDesign business proposal template can be reused. You can use it, reuse it, and remix it any time you want. Take one of your existing layouts and try to mix it up. Try things like moving text boxes or placing imagery in a different space.

Don't throw your layouts away, even if there's some you don't plan to use right now. Instead, keep them for a rainy day—or your next multipage design project. Common InDesign Proposal Questions Answered (FAQ)

Here's a collection of some frequently asked questions for proposal design. From knowing your target audience to coming up with fresh ideas, these answers will likely come in handy:

1. How Do I Write a Great Business Proposal?

We want our business proposals to look good. But they need to sound good too. Your writing is an essential part of your proposal. So, how do you write the perfect content to go with the perfect InDesign proposal template?

There's a lot to it. But the heart of a great proposal is often your target audience. You've got to know them to know how to best communicate with them.

For example, different audiences may have different background information and preconceived ideas. If we can identify that information, we can use it to craft more strategic writing.

Here are some free walkthroughs to help you create the perfect written content for your proposal.

2. What's the Best Way to Persuade My Target Audience?

Persuading your audience is a lot easier said than done. This can be particularly tricky when it comes to making a sale, closing a deal, or pitching a concept in your business proposal.

We don't want to be pushy, but we need to be direct. We also need to be clear and have all our needs, objectives, and outcomes clearly defined. This takes really careful planning. It's difficult to confidently sell a project or goal if you don't have your content outlined. This would be things like steps, funding needs, and resources. Organization and information can be vital when it comes to establishing confidence and trust.

Check out these articles—they'll help with financial planning and pitching.

3. What Kind of Proposal Should I Make? What Should I Include?

Just like not all businesses are the same, not all proposals are the same either. What your proposal includes should vary based on the needs of your business and your project. Start by making a list of what you need and what your target audience needs too. Remember, the target audience is often different from us, the designer or business owner. They won't have the same contexts or motivations.

Want to know about effective types of business project proposals? Check out this free article today.

4. What's My Target Audience, and How Do I Figure That Out?

We've done a lot of mentioning target audiences—so what's your target audience? What do you do if you're not quite sure who they are?

Research is essential. We can't just haphazardly guess who are target audience is. We'd run the risk of missing the mark as we try to create content to appeal to them. You can figure out who your target audience is by looking at things like user data and habits. You can also look at market trends, and even the audience of your peers or competition.

Want to learn more about identifying your target audience? These articles can help get you on your way.

5. How Do I Come Up with Creative Proposal Ideas?

There's lots of ways to come up with creative ideas. Here's some ways to help get you started:

  • Visual Research. Look at other proposal designs. Proposal design templates can be an excellent means of researching. Think about potential directions you could take your own proposal. Look at work from your peers and other members of your industry, too. The goal is not to copy, but rather to get an understanding of what works well and what does not.
  • Try a Sketchbook. Sometimes, we forget that good old fashioned paper and pencil can be a wonderful way to come up with ideas. Take notes. Sketch pages. Roughly try out some layout design ideas.
  • Observe Other Multi-Page Documents. Newspapers, magazines, look books, and other publications can also serve as visual inspiration. Keep an eye out for two page spreads that are visually engaging and try to figure out why.
  • Mix and Match Layouts. Jump into Adobe InDesign and experiment. Have fun with it! If you've got more than one proposal template, try mixing them together to come up with something new. It's a great idea to save your experiments too because they might serve as a perfect starting point for a future project.

Why Is My WordPress Site So Slow? (And How to Fix It)

Posted: 07 Jul 2021 02:00 AM PDT

So, just like millions of other website owners, you decided to use WordPress as your site's content-management system (CMS). Launched in 2003, the open-source, free-to-use, and extremely powerful software tool dominates the internet.

You were convinced that with the right web host company and the best technology, visitors to your website would engage with your content—delivered in a matter of seconds. Google would give your site a high ranking because the server response time would be so rapid that the pages would load like a bolt of lightning.

But what happened?

Your website is downright sluggish, and customers leave your site before the content is even loaded. You wanted as quick as a flash and instead your site is dull and slow—it's almost like watching paint dry!

But don't worry, with the tips in this article, you'll be able to get your site running quickly again.

Why Is My WordPress Site So Slow?

Here are a few pointers, which can help you get your site into shape.

What Is Slow? Check It Out!

Before we get down to the nitty-gritty, you need to establish just how slow is slow. Use one of the many page speed measurement tools on the internet to test the speed.

Pagepseed Insights Report for a WebsitePagepseed Insights Report for a WebsitePagepseed Insights Report for a Website
Pagespeed Insights will show you what is slowing down your website.

You just need to input your URL and, in a few seconds, you will have the answer, with details on some of the specific reasons why your site is running slowly and how you can fix it.

Server Response Time

If you don't get enough speed from your host, the server response time for your WordPress site will be slow. You need faster, reliable, and high-quality WordPress hosting, which is configured to your level of traffic or site.

Short Server Response TimeShort Server Response TimeShort Server Response Time
Choosing the right hosting provider can reduce server response time.

Remember that your Google Ads, SEO and Google rankings, as well as the emails and inquiries your site generates, are all affected by the quality of your hosting.

Get in touch with the right hosting companies who offer a wide range of plans and options to suit, and be sure to invest in quality right from the start.

Too Many Plugins Plugged In

WordPress offers a huge array of free plugins—over 58,000! There are around 15 plugins available just for the weather. So there's always a plugin for your every need, not to mention for optimizing and customizing your website. But beware… plugins can add load time and slow down your site.

Too Many PluginsToo Many PluginsToo Many Plugins
Too many active plugins can easily slow down a website.

Try to aim for up to ten plugins to begin with—not just all the ones you fancy. You can find out if any are slowing down your WordPress site by deactivating each plugin one by one and then checking the page speed, removing or replacing any culprits you find.

It's a good idea to keep stock of your plugins and delete any you're no longer using. Less (plugins) is definitely more (speed)!

Images Not Compressed or Optimized

There is a saying that "a picture is worth a thousand words," which may be true, but it really depends on the picture format! You may want to impress with images of your products or services, but end up slowing down your WordPress site.

EWWW Image OptimizerEWWW Image OptimizerEWWW Image Optimizer
This free plugin can make image files 40% smaller by converting them to WebP format.

Compress the images on your site using lossless compression (this type of compression creates smaller file sizes without reducing image quality).

You can easily reduce the page load time by 1 to 2 seconds by compressing the images you use on your site by 20 to 50% without affecting the quality.

Edit your photos before you upload them using Preview in Mac, Picture Manager in Windows, or another photo editing app. Typical image file formats are JPG and PNG for your pages and posts.

Remember that users with laptops, desktops, and mobile screens will all want to view your pictures in good quality—not all screens are alike, of course! It is good to remember that a DPI (dots per inch) of 72 is standard for web publication, not your typical 300 DPI for printing.

Don't Forget Caching

Caching is all about storing copies of files in a cache, which is a temporary storage location. These copies can then be accessed very quickly.

WP Super Cache Caching OptionsWP Super Cache Caching OptionsWP Super Cache Caching Options
Using a free caching plugin like WP Super Cache can significantly speed up a website.

Caching therefore saves time, and WordPress runs faster. Before the visitor to your site requests a page from your web server, each page on your site is already prebuilt, so there's no need for any lengthy processing.

The visitor, or perhaps your precious customer, is quickly engaged on your site and doesn't leave out of total boredom while waiting for the page to load.

Safer With Updates and a Good Clean

Updated Themes and PluginsUpdated Themes and PluginsUpdated Themes and Plugins
Plugin and theme updates can improve both speed and security.

If your WordPress is not updated, you can experience slow response times. Yes, it's time-consuming to have to do updates, sometimes several times every week. But it's really worth it, because with just one click, you have updates to plugins or themes, for example. Updates with new security features mean that you and your digital environment are safe and protected.

Plugin Garbage CollectorPlugin Garbage CollectorPlugin Garbage Collector
Plugin Garbage Collector is an example of one of the free cleanup plugins you can download.

To make sure that your website runs efficiently and fast, try to keep up with its cleaning and maintenance by choosing one or several tools to automate this process.

In the End: It's About Keeping Them Coming Back for More

WordPress currently claims to power 41% of the web—a colossal share! Not only that, but it is available in over 190 languages. Therefore, you know that with WordPress, you have one of the best content-management systems on offer on the market today.

Why Is WordPress So Slow Then?

If you want your visitors and customers to be engaged on your site and come back for more, you really need to optimize what you have on offer.

It's good to take the time to make sure you have a web-hosting provider that understands your needs and delivers in terms of products and high-quality service and support. Your server response time is very important.

Try to install only the plugins you need and remove any obsolete ones, and don't forget to optimize and compress any pictures you use on your WordPress site.

It's clear that caching saves everyone time and therefore money, so it is essential to speed up your site. Then, if you perform the necessary updates, everything will keep working just fine and in good time.

20 Best Free WordPress Themes For Business

Posted: 07 Jul 2021 01:04 AM PDT

If you have a business, you need a website. A professional website allows potential clients to learn more about your services and how you can help them. It's also an online asset that you have complete control over, unlike social media profiles which are owned by the respective social media platforms.

Since you don't own them, that means you could lose access to them at any time. Not to mention, you're at the mercy of their algorithm so your followers might not even see your posts.

As such, creating a website for your business is no longer a luxury commodity, it's a must. Luckily, with WordPress, you can create a website quickly. There are plenty of free WordPress themes for business and we'll share the best ones in this article.

Common Business Website Features

Before we dive into the free WordPress themes for business, let's go over the most important features every business website should have. This includes:

  • Services Page: your visitors want to know how you can help them. A services page that outlines what each service includes, how long it takes, and how much it costs will answer those questions and let your visitors know they're in the right place.
  • Contact Page: a contact page allows your visitors to get in touch with you so they can ask more questions about your service or initiate the process of working with you.
  • Tagline: don't make your visitors guess if they're in the right place. Your tagline should answer who you help, what you do, and what makes you different. This simple sentence will immediately let your visitors know that you're the right business to help them.
  • Call To Action: your visitors have seen your services and your tagline made it super clear that you are the right choice. But what should they do now? That's where your call to action comes in. Use it to guide your visitors towards the next step in your onboarding process.
  • Opt-In Form: be sure to include an opt-in form that allows your visitors to sign up for an email list. This will allow you to nurture the relationship with visitors who aren't quite ready to book your service yet and build trust that will ultimately turn them into customers and clients.

With that out of the way, let's take a look at those free WordPress themes for business websites.

What You Will Need

You can use any fonts as you learn how to make curved text in Affinity Designer, but these are the ones I used in this tutorial:

1. How to Add Text on a Path in Affinity Designer

Step 1

First of all, you will need a shape on which you can add the text. For this example we'll use a circle, but keep in mind that you can apply text on any type of shape or path.

Select the Ellipse Tool (M) from your Tools and click and drag on your canvas to create a 250 px circle. Make sure that you're holding down the Shift key as you click and drag to easily create a perfect circle.

To move this circle to the center of the canvas, click the Alignment button from the context toolbar, and just click the Align Center and Align Middle buttons. Now that you have your shape, let's learn how to add text in Affinity Designer.

Step 2

Make sure that your circle is still selected and select the Artistic Text Tool (T) from your Tools.

Hover the cursor over the edge of your circle and, once your cursor icon changes, you can click to add text on that path. Keep the cursor slightly outside the path if you wish to add text on the outside of that path or on the inside when you wish to add the text inside that path.

For this example, we'll add it on the outside, and let's type in "SUPERIOR QUALITY".

2. How to Make Text Curve in Affinity Designer

Step 1

Now that you've learned how to curve text in Affinity Designer, let's see how you can adjust the position.

Take a closer at your path, and you'll notice a green handle which indicates the starting point of the text and an orange handle which indicates the ending point of your text. Simply click and drag any of these two handles whenever you wish to adjust the position of your text on the path.

Step 2

You might have noticed that your text starts exactly from that green handle. This happens because the text alignment is set to Left.

To move your text in the center, at an equal distance between the green and orange handles, just click the Align Centre button from the context toolbar.

Step 3

In some cases, you might want to move your text from one side of the path to the other. To easily make this change, all you have to do is click the Reverse Text Path button from the context toolbar.

Step 4

Once you add your text, you'll most probably want to stylize it. In order to make changes to your text, first you need to select it. Double-click when you wish to select only one word, or triple-click when you need to select more than one word.

Focus on the Character studio panel (View > Studio > Character) and replace the font with the Richson font from Envato Elements. Set the size to 55 pt, click the Font Colour wheel, and replace it with R=58 G=69 B=91, and then move to the Positioning and Transform section and increase the Tracking to 100%.

Step 5

Make sure that you deselect the text and click at the end of it, and then simply press Enter to add a second piece of text, but this time on the inside of that same circle.

Type "MADE IN GERMANY", and now you have another two handles (darker green and red) that can be used to adjust the position of this new text.

Step 6

Even though you added the text on the inside of the path, there's a neat technique that you can use to move it to the outside of the path.

Make sure that you have it selected or simply click on it, move to the context toolbar, and just adjust the position of that Baseline slider.

Step 7

Finally, triple-click this text to select it, replace the font with Robinson Regular, and lower the tracking to 50%.
