| Posted: 04 Jul 2021 07:43 AM PDT Figma variants save you the headache of searching through thousands of components, trying to find the right one for your design. They allow you to alter certain predefined aspects of single components, to make any variant you like. In my opinion Figma is the best UI design tool available at the moment, and this feature is one of my personal favorites. So let's take a look! Components in the Days Before Figma VariantsBefore Figma introduced variants, you may have managed your components like this: ![]() ![]() ![]() You'd begin with frames, in which you'd design your component (a button in this example) in its default state. Then you might make a hover state, then perhaps a small version, and a hover version for that small button too. Finally you'd make components of each one, so that whenever you needed one you'd be able to access it under Assets and drag it onto your design. Better Components Nowadays with Figma VariantsNowadays, with Figma variants, you can design a single component. Here, I've used the first default button and turned it into a component using the component button at the top of the screen. Please bear with me while I use the words "component" and "button" in all kinds of different contexts.. ![]() ![]() ![]() With that done, head over to the Variants pane in the Inspector to the right and hit the + symbol to add a new variant. Doing so will create a group of the variants, like so: ![]() ![]() ![]() Organizing Variant PropertiesOur two variants are now organized under the same property (called "property 1" until we change it) and we're going to make this property relate to size. So our first step will be to rename it. ![]() ![]() ![]() We can rename the actual variants too, so instead of "Default" and "Variant2" (as you can see above) we'll call them "Default" and "Small". And once they're named, we can select each one and make actual changes to it (like making the small one small..) ![]() ![]() ![]() Secondary Variant PropertiesNow let's add another property. In the Variants pane go to Add a New Property and give it a name (like "Style"). Now let's add a new button to our group by clicking the + symbol in the bottom corner of the group itself. We'll make this one the same size as the Default button, but with different colors for a hover state. This will be our "Hover" style. Repeat the process for a small hover variant, and you'll have a group of 4 button variants. ![]() ![]() ![]() Here's the Cool PartHaving set everything up, let's pretend we're working on a new page. When we need one of our button components we go to Assets to see the available components which we can drag onto the page: ![]() ![]() ![]() In the Inspector we can see the variant options for this component now, so we can select the size we want, and the style we want. ![]() ![]() ![]() ConclusionFigma Variants will save you a lot of time, especially if you're already someone who likes organization hacks! Check out the video above for more tips on naming conventions, converting existing components into variants, and working with more complex components like navigation bars. That's one example of using color and illustration to make even the best pitch decks more interesting and less intimidating. 3. Facebook Pitch DeckWe all know that Mark Zuckerberg and Eduardo Saverin created Facebook as a social network for universities. When they first tried to pitch the idea to potential investors, they didn't have a clear business plan. You can't create a startup pitch deck that lacks a single focus. It's an example of a successful startup pitch deck for certain! 4. Airbnb Pitch DeckThe Airbnb pitch deck is also one of the most searched for. Not only because it's become one of the biggest companies out there today, but also because they've created a new niche in the travel/hotel industry. You can see it in how they present the problem, the solution, the facts, the business model, and more: Why the rule of three for startup pitch decks? It's simple, memorable and clean. 5. Uber Pitch DeckUber's pitch deck was far from impressive, but what caught the investor's fancy was the solution they provided. Although Uber has found itself in hot water many times, the solution they provided at that time on their startup pitch deck was nothing but awesome. 6. Mint Pitch DeckMint, a personal financial services tool, has a simple pitch deck but the investors were drawn to it. First of all, it presented what value it can give to their users and partners. Second, they also understand that by putting their money in, each investor is exposed to different levels of risk.
They put their investors' minds to rest by creating some exit mechanisms to their investments. Key Takeaway: Add a slide that reassures potential investors and shows them some ways to mitigate that risk. 7. Buffer Pitch DeckBuffer is one of the top social media scheduling platforms. It allows you to schedule your content on Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook, and LinkedIn. What makes this pitch deck popular is the presentation of solid facts and numbers. It also includes the milestones they've accomplished including the number of users they have, the annual revenue, and the app integrations.
This allowed investors to see that they're not investing in a company that's losing, but rather one that's growing steadily over the years. 8. Front Pitch DeckPresenting the problem and solution as succinctly as possible in your pitch deck is vital if you want to catch your potential investors' eyes. Front not only did that, but they were able to create a simple visual without overloading the information.
They were able to distill each problem into a single phrase making it catchy and memorable. They also used the same strategy when they presented their startup presentation with a solution and value proposition. 9. Sequoia Capital Pitch Deck TemplateSequoia Capital is one of the leading VC firms in Silicon Valley. Looking at the pitch deck they recommend, it gives a clue to any startup what they're looking for. Copper Cow Coffee Pitch DeckCopper Cow Coffee is a startup that offers specialty Vietnamese coffee using 100% biodegradable pour over technology. Kickfolio Pitch DeckShowing the growth and metrics of your company is something to be proud of. Thus, it makes sense if you highlight them to show your prospective investors how much you've grown. Kickfolio understood this so instead of using small graphs; it presented charts and numbers in each slide. Why hide your metrics when you all worked hard to achieve what your company has? 12. Reflect Pitch DeckReflect, a mental health startup, has nailed what a killer pitch deck looks like—minimal yet all the information is there. Aiming to be a leader in mental healthcare that uses data-driven matching, they were able to reflect that by using facts and data in their pitch. The data presented was straightforward and easy to follow. 13. Yalochat Pitch DeckPitch decks are, in one way or another, like infographics—present facts and figures and pair them with graphic icons. The result is an engaging and informative piece of content. Yalochat used this approach, and the result is a fancy startup pitch deck, but the value is still there. Plus, the color palette they used has made the figures and information even more interesting. ![]() ![]() Key Takeaway: Color plays a huge role in any design and your pitch deck is no exception. 16. Crema Pitch DeckWhether you're creating a design or offering your service, being consistent is gives you a huge advantage. The design team behind Crema's pitch deck understood this. Even the color and pattern all add to the cohesiveness of their theme resulting in a killer pitch deck you can't easily ignore. 17. Mattermark Pitch DeckAny effective product, service, and even a pitch deck always understands what their target audience wants. Mattermark knew that and used the very problem their prospect is experiencing in how they created the layout for their pitch deck. The problem they presented was how unorganized SaaS reporting is, and they used screenshots to illustrate that. After that, they offered their solution by bringing all the data in one place. 18. Dwolla Pitch DeckDwolla's pitch deck banked on stories. They understood the power of stories and how they could move emotions.
Here, they tell the story of how Dwolla started allowing the audience to feel that the people behind the company identifies with their pain point. It also shows that the product was created to help them solve their problem the way it helped the developer. 19. Foursquare Pitch DeckFoursquare was one of the first businesses to use gamification and it shines in their pitch deck. These tips will help take your worries away and help you focus on what you'll put inside your pitch deck. Take a look at these five tips and win your audience with an awesome PPT pitch deck. 1. Include Your Vision and Value PropositionAn effective pitch deck starts with your company's vision and the value you can add to your prospective customers. It doesn't have to be a complex explanation, but more like a short tweet or a one-sentence overview. Make it short and sweet. You can also add your value proposition to show your uniqueness in comparison to other companies. For example, Uber presented their value proposition as the "NetJets of Car Services." 2. Present the ProblemWe've said it earlier in the article, and we'll say it again—a successful product always solves a problem. Thus, you shouldn't fail to mention that on your pitch deck. Aside from talking about the problem, you should also talk about who has that kind of problem. Back your claims with facts and figures. You can also follow what Dwolla did by sharing their story of how their company was created to solve a problem the founder was experiencing at that time. The more you make the problem more relatable, the more you'll attract investors to your pitch. 3. Offer a SolutionIf you pinpoint the problem but can't present a viable solution, your pitch deck is nothing. You've got to articulate your solution in your pitch. You can use the solution as a continuation of your story. Talk about your product and how it can solve the problem you mentioned. Your product is the hero that'll save the day and solve the problem at hand, just like what Mattermark did in our earlier example. 4. Explain Your Business ModelSo, you've got a product that'll solve a particular problem, but how can it make money? Who pays the bills? Aside from mentioning these points, you can also use this section to talk about how your pricing compares with similar offerings that are already in the market. 5. Showcase Your TeamJust like the Buzzfeed pitch deck presented above, featuring the people behind your company will give more weight and authority to your pitch. Include their skills, experiences, successes, and expertise. It shows investors what each of the members contribute and why they're a critical part of the company. The free team PowerPoint templates on Envato Elements make it easy to create a team page that stands out. 5 Top Startup Pitch Deck Trends for 2021We've looked at some of the best pitch decks ever made. In this next section, we're going to cover five quick and easy steps that you can take to create a menu from your template. For this tutorial, we'll be using the premium template, Food Menu. ![]() ![]() ![]() This is a clean and stylish looking menu that can be used for all types of restaurants and cafes. Let's get started: 1. Change the Color SchemeThis template features a gray and black color scheme. We'd like to change it to fit our restaurant's brand. The main highlight color for our restaurant is blue. Let's change the rectangle shapes on this menu to that color. First click the edge of the gray rectangles so it's highlighted. This brings up the Shape Format menu header. Select the Shape Fill option. Now select our blue color and the shape will be colored blue. Repeat this process for the all the gray shapes on the menu. ![]() ![]() ![]() 2. Add In Your Menu ItemsLet's add our menu items by editing the placeholder menu items that came with the template. This is a very simple and easy process. Double click the text that you'd like to edit and add in your restaurant's menu items. ![]() ![]() ![]() 3. Change Font SizesOur menu is starting to take shape. But we'd like to make the design seem a little more spacious. To do this, we'll adjust the font size of the menu items. Double click on each block of text and select all the text. Then navigate to the Home tab and choose the font size to the right of the font selector. Decrease the font by 3 px. That'll open up more room on our design. ![]() ![]() ![]() 4. Add Social Media IconsTo let our customers know that we're on social media, we'll add social media icons at the bottom of our menu with our social media handles. To add in an icon, choose the Insert menu option. Then select Pictures and choose the Picture From File... option. Select the social media icons to add from your computer. You can download social media and many other icons from Envato Elements. Next, we'll add in our social media handles by adding a Text Box from the Insert menu tab. Resize it to fit under our icon. Then type our social media handle into the text box. 5. Double Check Your MenuBefore you print out copies for your restaurant, double check all your menu items, their prices, and all the other contact information on the menu. This is important as you don't print out a few hundred copies of a menu with incorrect information. Once you've double checked all your information and it's correct, print out your menu by clicking on the Print icon on the top left hand corner of Word. From there you can adjust the number of copies that you'd like to print. ![]() ![]() ![]() Now let's have a look at a few quick tips on how to make great restaurant Menus. 5 Quick Tips to Make Great Restaurant Menus in Word for 2021The premium restaurant menu templates on Envato Elements and GraphicRiver give you a great starting point for creating a professional-looking menu. But you'll want to do further customization to make the template unique for your restaurant. To help you get the most out of the Microsoft Word menu templates, I've gathered five quick tips to make great restaurant menus in Word for 2021: 1. Include Item PricesDepending on the design template that you choose to use, consider having the price of each item under the description. By placing the prices in a far-right column, your diners may select menu items based on price and not what they really want. Having the price under the description helps avoid this. 2. Don't Clutter the MenuA cluttered menu will make your restaurant look disorganized and professional. Make sure to leave plenty of space around the different sections of your menu as well as in between the menu items. Including this extra space makes the design seem modern and is easier to read. ![]() ![]() 3. Choose an Easy to Read FontA sub-par dining experience is sure to ensue if your diners have a hard time reading the fonts on your menu. While many of the fonts used in the free templates feature easy to read fonts, some don't. A few free, elegant, and easy to read fonts to use are Helvetica, Open Sans, and Roboto. ![]() ![]() 4. Use Shapes to Segment Your LayoutShapes such as squares, lines, and triangles can be very effective for separating the different sections of your menu. This helps create distinct sections such as main courses, appetizers, and desserts. Using these shapes as well in combination with the space left between each section and your menu items makes the menu very easy to navigate. ![]() ![]() 5. Use Complementary ColorsComplementary colors will help add another dimension to your menu. Use the complementary colors on headers and on specific menu items. By leaving the font color of the description and price black, you allow the complementary colors that you chose for the menu to pop out. Choose complementary colors that fit with your business's color scheme.
