For any enticing position you apply for, you'll be up against dozens of other highly qualified candidates.    What makes it worse is that even if you've got the most talent, you still might not get the job. Research shows that half of all interviewers make their minds up about a candidate in the first five minutes. The decision is based on lots of factors, from how you shake hands to how you present your portfolio. So in this tutorial, you'll hear what creative directors and recruiters are looking for when they step into the interview room and sit down opposite you. You'll find out how you can best prepare, what you should do, and what key mistakes you should avoid. You've got the skills, after all. You've worked hard, and you know you could do a good job if given the opportunity. So maximize your chances of negotiating that final, awkward hurdle of the job interview by following these strategies. 1. Have an OpinionAs a Senior Creative Director at Starwood Hotels & Resorts, Stephen Gates has interviewed hundreds of candidates, and one thing he expects is for them to "show up with something to say, some insights you want to share and some ideas of how you are going to make our work better." Having an opinion shows that you've really done your research and know the company and its work, he wrote on his website. It also helps him see how you think about design and branding, and how you communicate your ideas. So the first step is to immerse yourself in the work of the firm you're interviewing with. Don't just browse the website, but really dig deep to look at as many of their projects as you can, so that you can start to formulate an honest, helpful opinion. Then you need to find a way to communicate your ideas most effectively. You don't want to come across as being arrogant by trashing their work, but on the other hand you don't want to just give bland praise. Go for constructive criticism: really engage with what they've produced and acknowledge its strengths, while suggesting a few areas in which it could be improved or extended. 2. Get Your Portfolio Right"I run a company," writes Simon Manchipp. "It's tough. Complex. Very time consuming. I am time-poor. So your portfolio has one purpose: Dazzle me." So how do you do that? Manchipp, co-founder of London-based design practice SomeOne, says he is looking for "beautifully crafted, brilliant ideas. And don't worry, it needn't have actually been accepted by the client (although that always gets extra kudos). Show me your cut. The one that floats your boat." Dan Mall, founder of design studio SuperFriendly in Philadelphia, has a similar philosophy. He wants to see more than just "all the shiny results that everyone has on their portfolios." He wants to see "all the previous versions before you got to the final version that's live." "Knowing how you think is what convinces me to hire you," he told me in an email. "Show me all your prototypes. Show me the photos of whiteboard sketches that you did. Show me the version the client hated, and show me how you fixed it. Show me all the versions that never made the cut. Show me that you can think through all types of problems, and you'll likely get a job offer." When Lee Newham was design director at Davies Hall, he liked to see candidates bringing not only their final work, but also mockups and sketches. "We are as interested in how you got to the final solution as the solution itself," he said in an article for graphic designer David Airey. "You can show other concepts." Don't talk about your work too much at first. If you're talking all the time, the interviewer will tend to look at you, not at your portfolio. Newham advises giving just "one short sentence to engage the interviewer with you." Then move straight to the work. If you're showing logo work, be sure that it creates what Manchipp calls a "brand world". In other words, "make sure it is applied to something, inventively, progressively, interestingly." He wants to see more than "just an Illustrator vector whacked on a LiveImage Photoshop file. Show me how the work goes deep." And just for clarification, yes, you should always bring your resume and portfolio with you to the interview, even if you've submitted them before. The interviewer may not have your portfolio, may have forgotten it, or may have got you confused with the other ten people he or she is interviewing that day. Gates puts it very simply: "Bring your resume and portfolio or go home." 3. Talk About the WhyAfter you've shown some of your work, be prepared to talk about why and how you created it. "It's not only what you're doing it but the strategy behind it as well, how you tell the message," said Skullcandy's Nate Morley in an Inc Magazine article. "A lot of it is the energy that comes from someone. When they start talking about an idea, when somebody's really got that creative juice, it's almost like they can't help themselves from being flooded with ideas." Manchipp advises thinking of every project in the following terms:
It's a simple framework, but can help you to describe what he calls "the creative work behind the creative work". Gates also places a high premium on finding candidates who can communicate the why: "It really isn't very hard to find someone who can create a great visual design, but it is really hard to find someone who can put thought, experience and originality into the thinking behind that design. So even if you have the best portfolio in the world but you can't explain why you did what you did then there is a 98% chance I will pass on you as a member of my team." 4. Look 'Em in the EyeRemember that statistic about interviewers making up their minds in the first five minutes? It's from a 2014 Harris Poll on behalf of CareerBuilder. It also found that by minute 15, that percentage rose to 90%. So first impressions certainly count.    In fact, other research suggests the window of opportunity may be even shorter. According to a report in The Guardian, psychology student Tricia Prickett showed videos of job interviews to observers, and found that they could predict whether or not the interviewee would be offered the job from watching just the first 15 seconds of the tape. In 15 seconds you barely have time to say more than "Hello", so clearly non-verbal cues are important. That same CareerBuilder survey found that hiring managers complained of the following mistakes made by candidates:
Some of this stuff is just how you naturally behave, and some of it is how you react to stress. For example, when I'm under pressure, I tend to reach up with my right hand and rub my temple. As habits go, it's not the worst one you can imagine, but any nervous tic can get pretty irritating after a while. The fact that these habits are so ingrained and unconscious makes them very hard to correct. If you can afford it, you could hire a body language coach, but a quick and cost-free home remedy is to have a friend video you, preferably while you're doing something embarrassing or stressful like giving a speech in public, and then analyze your performance. The only way to get out of bad habits is to break them through constant practice and repetition. When you find yourself resorting to a nervous tic, stop yourself. If you struggle to make eye contact, force yourself to do it. This can be a large topic, but if you work through that list from the CareerBuilder survey and eliminate any of those from your interviewing technique, you'll be ahead of many other candidates. 5. Show You Want ItThis last one may seem obvious, but it crops up time and again when creative directors and recruiters are talking about what they look for in candidates. "Freelancers can tend to be too laid back," Louise Coaker-Nugent, Director of The Fix Creative, told me in an email. "It can seem like they don't want the job sometimes. We have had that a lot recently." "Get excited," advises Manchipp. "If you don't want it more than the next person, the next person will probably get it." So how can you communicate that? Well, first, notice that the title of this section is not: "Say You Want It". I used the word "show" for a reason. After all, pretty much all the candidates are going to say they want the job. That part is easy. Most of them will even make up convincing reasons for wanting the job (other than needing the money). But showing you want the job is much harder. Part of it is following the other four steps we've outlined so far. If you can make a strong visual impression, show a well-prepared portfolio, and communicate fluently about your own work and the company's, then you're already a long way towards showing you want the job. It's also about doing the basics right. I asked Nick Finney, Director of NB Studio, for his one piece of job interview advice, and he wrote: "Don't be late. Nothing says 'I don't care' like turning up late to an interview—even if you really do care. Transport will let you down, and maps will misdirect you. Showing up stressed and sweaty won't give you a chance to present the best version of you. So, plan ahead, get there early and relax; and while you're waiting soak up the atmosphere, get an impression of what it's going to be like to work there." Also be sure to ask questions. Show an interest in everything about the company, and in the interviewer too. Companies routinely research candidates on social media, so you can turn the tables and research your interviewer. Find out something about the interviewer's life and career, and ask questions that establish a personal connection, while showing you've gone the extra mile. Also have some extra questions prepared in case the topics you'd planned to ask about have been covered during the interview. There's only one thing worse than not asking any questions, and that's asking a question that your interviewer has already answered. SummaryIt's a tough industry out there, but people are getting hired every day, and there's no reason why the next one shouldn't be you. The good news is that in many of the creative directors' comments, there's a note of exasperation. When you hear them talking about turning up on time and remembering to bring your portfolio, you realize that many candidates are pretty much disqualifying themselves by making basic errors. Nothing can guarantee success, of course. Sometimes you're just up against a better qualified candidate, and sometimes you may be interviewing for a job that's already been filled for reasons that have nothing to do with qualifications. But if you follow the steps outlined in this tutorial, you'll certainly increase your chances of passing the interview, being hired, and embarking on the career you deserve. For the purposes of this quick walk-through, I'm using the React PowerPoint template. It's got a clean and elegant layout. It also comes with a grand total of 30 slides that are based on master slides so you can easily edit it.    Step 1. Decide on Which Slides You'll UseAs mentioned earlier, the React PowerPoint template comes with a variety of slides. If you're using a similar technology presentation template, you'll have several slides to showcase your services. There's no need to use all the slides in the template, so the first thing you need to do is decide which slides you'll use. Step 2. Edit the Contents of Each Slide LayoutOnce you've picked the slides you intend to use, you'll need to edit the demo content. Replacing the text is as easy as clicking into the slide, selecting the demo text, and entering your own. I've selected all the text in Slide #2 in the About section. As soon as I start typing, it'll be replaced with the information I enter. Simply repeat this process on all the slides you plan to use.    Step 3. Customize FontsOnce you've entered all your presentation content, take some time to customize the fonts. To change the fonts, select the text. Then, choose a different font from the drop-down menu in the Ribbon, like I've done on the second slide in the About section. To change all the fonts at once choose a different font theme from the Design tab by clicking on the second tab. Select Fonts from the drop-down menu.    Step 4. Customize ColorsFinally, customize the colors in your technology presentation template to match your brand colors. Click on the element that uses color. Then, choose a different color from the right-hand sidebar. Or click over to the Design tab and choose a different color theme from the first drop-down menu. The latter option will allow you to quickly change all the colors at once.    Step 5. Add an ImageThe best way to complete your slide is to add an image in the placeholder. Don't forget that your subscription to Envato Elements also unlocks stock photography you can use. One of my favorite things about this slide in React is the pre-built image placeholder. It's in a custom mask shape that transforms a standard shaped image into a custom one. Just click on the placeholder, then browse to an image. | How to Colour Grade Photos Using 3-Way Wheels in Adobe Camera Raw (Free) Posted: 04 Jun 2021 02:29 AM PDT With a recent update of Adobe Camera Raw you might have noticed the Split Toning option has been scrapped in favour of Colour Grading. Don't worry though, you can still do split toning with the colour wheels. We'll take a look at the new feature and show you how you can use it to give you better control over your photographic colour editing. What is Colour Grading?Unlike colour correction, which involves bringing raw footage or photographs up to a good basic (corrective/accurate) level for evaluation, colour grading is about creating a particular style, look, or tone. While it isn't essential, for this tutorial it will really help if you have a good knowledge of colour theory and associated topics. Here are some articles you might find useful:
Colour grading is about bringing a mood or visual character to your work, like giving it a cinematic feel, or maybe recreating the effect and tone of traditional film. How to Colour Grade Photos in Adobe Camera RawThis is the image I'll be colour grading in Adobe Camera Raw, I've chosen it because hopefully it lends itself well to a more stylised edit, it feels a little post-apocalyptic! Do your basic edits first to bring your photo from a flat RAW profile, to a good base to start your colour grading.    Colour Grading WheelsOnce you've made all the corrections you need, we can move to the colour wheels.    The new colour wheels in Camera Raw might look familiar if you've done colour grading before in other programs. This style of colour interface is popular, and you can find versions of it in many image-editing apps—especially for video. You'll see three wheels: Shadows, Midtones and Highlights.    If you click on one of the wheel icons where it says Adjust at the top, you'll see just that wheel – so, Shadows in the example above – and an additional Luminance slider as well as the previously visible Blending and Balance sliders. How to Adjust Colour Using The WheelsIn the wheel you'll see a circle with a dot, and you can use these to adjust the saturation and the hue. Moving it around the wheel will adjust the hue, and moving it in and out will change the saturation.    If I stick with Shadows and pull the wheel around and out to pink (100), you'll see that the shadows of the image become heavily saturated with that colour. If I kept the 'handle' at pink but moved in towards the centre of the circle (0), the pink shadows would be less vivid until they reached 0, where there'd be no tint. If you want to adjust the hue (colour) without touching where you have the saturation, you can grab the dot on the outside of the wheel instead. Alternative Slider AdjustmentsUnder the wheel and above Luminance, there's an arrow. Click that and you'll get two further sliders: Hue and Saturation.    These sliders are another way to control the adjustments I've just run through, rather than making changes on the wheel itself. They can be handy for tuning adjustments. Pull the arrow on the gradient slider to change the attribute you want to finesse. For even more control, it's possible to keying-in adjustment incrementally: move your cursor into the box, and press up or down on your keyboard to nudge the values one at a time. New: MidtonesEach wheel works in the same way, so you make adjustments to hue and saturation using either the controls directly on the wheel, or the sliders if you prefer them. If you used to use the split tone feature in previous versions of ACR then you're familiar with adjustments to the shadows and highlights. Midtone adjustments are new and might take some getting used to. Which areas of your image get treated as midtones will largely depend on where you have your Balance slider.    If I test this with a pink hue again to make it noticeable, and the Saturation at 100, then the Balance set to 50 (neutral/middle) would make everything quite pink as it's a fairly balanced image with not much in the way of highlights and shadows. If I drag the Balance to the left, the pink disappears from the darker pixels but is still visible in brighter areas, like the sky.    Move Balance to the right and the pink hue leaves the brighter sky area and moves to the darker places like the ground and walls.    Blending and BalanceBlending and Balance are shown under each wheel but it's important to note that they are the same sliders, not an individual adjustment for each tonal range, changing them regardless of which wheel you're viewing will adjust the blending and balance of all three wheels. These sliders affect how your three tone ranges overlap. How dramatic or not that is will depend on the image and the tonal range within it. High contrast images will be different to flatter ones, and so on. A great way to see how colour grading impacts an image is actually to try it with a monochrome one! I'll show you an example of that a little later. LuminanceYou'll have seen luminance options elsewhere in your editing panels, but these are specific to your colour grading changes. For example, if you wanted to give your shadows a tint, you might lift the luminance for Shadows and whatever hue you'd applied would show in those. Unlike Balance and Blending, Luminance (like Hue and Saturation) is specific to the tonal range you're working on and you can adjust the slider across each wheel. Global ControlAs well as the three-way wheels, there's a Global Control option too.    As you'd expect, this affects your whole image, tinting the entire tonal range    A pink hue as demonstrated with Shadows and Midtones but you can see it's much stronger and across the full picture rather than targeting a particular tonal area. You might wonder why you'd want to tint everything if you have three-way control anyway but you can apply a global adjustment without it affecting your three-way changes. For example, you might want to put a vintage tint over the whole image with a yellow or green hue. Colour Grading an ImageBack to my example image, I mentioned it looked almost post-apocalyptic and I would love to try and give a nod to that awesome Blade Runner orange and yellow toning that they use so well.    As I'm colour grading, I find it's useful to keep popping into the Colour Mixer tab and making slight adjustments there too. In my image, the green of the trees was still quite prominent and distracting, so in Colour Mixer I was able to lower the saturation of greens specifically, and also to shift their hue slightly to yellower tones. Changes on Monochrome ImageHere are the same colour grading changes shown on the same image but monochrome rather than colour.    You can see the major difference is that on the colourless image the tones look like they've had the same colour washed over them, but in the colour photo we get back some of those nice oranges on the walls and retain a little of the sky, buildings, trees and ground colours.    Another Colour Grading ExampleHere's another example from the same image set but this time with less stylised grading and probably how you would use colour grading day-to-day (rather than making extreme changes).    Here, I went for yellows in the highlights and midtones, and blue in the shadows. This looks more like the result you'd get with the previous split tone options in ACR but with greater control in the midtone range. Colour Grading in Adobe Camera RawI liked the old split toning feature in Adobe Camera Raw but the new three-wheel colour grading editing is gives much more nuanced control over colours right across your tonal range, and then the balance of those and how they work together as well. Whether you want to add a slight wash of colour over your photograph or if you're trying something more dramatic and stylised, it's all available to you in a really quick and simple way. If you're not a fan of colour grading manually or you don't feel ready to delve in yet, you can always try using a LUT (an Adobe Camera Raw preset) to quickly and easily colour grade your photographs too. Colour grading is fun though, and it's well worth exploring and playing around with colour grading in Camera Raw to see what you can achieve.

1. How to Scan the PaperStep 1Make sure that your paper is not too wrinkled, because this can create blurred areas on your texture.    Step 2Then we need to prepare the scanner glass to avoid stains or unwanted elements on our texture. You can use a wet wipe for glasses to clean the glass.    Step 3Once you've cleaned the scanner glass, put your paper inside the scanner.    Step 4Set the following settings in your scanner preferences: A4 paper size, 300 dpi. Then start scanning. The color of our scanned paper can be different from the color of our paper, but it is much more important for us to preserve the structure.    2. How to Prepare the DocumentStep 1Press Control-N to create a new document and use the following settings: 3000 x 2000 px; 300 dpi.    Step 2Go to File > Place and put your paper scan inside the document.    Step 3Resize your image to the borders of the document and click Enter.    3. How to Create a Dust Paper Texture From Scanned PaperStep 1Let's begin with the scratch texture. Right Click on the paper layer and select Rasterize Layer.    Step 2Now we need to invert the image. Select the layer and hit Control-I.    Step 3Use the Shift-Control-Alt-B key combination and set the following settings: Reds: 40%; Yellows: 60%; Greens: 40%; Cyans: -25%; Blues: -25; Magentas: 80.    Step 4After that, press Shift-Control-Alt-L to add Auto Contrast to your layer for your dust and scratches texture.    Step 5Go to Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast and use the following settings: Brightness: -105; Contrast: 95.    Step 6Right Click on the scratch texture layer and select Duplicate Layer.    Step 7Select the copy of your layer, and then press Control-T and Rotate it 180° while holding Shift.    Step 8Change the Blending Mode of your layer to Lighten.    Step 9Select your layers by holding Shift and then Right Click > Merge Layers.    Step 10Select your new layer and then go to Image > Adjustments > Exposure and set the following settings: Exposure: 0,00; Offset: +0,005; Gamma Correction: 1,00.    Step 11Now let's make our scratch texture just a bit more detailed. Make a Duplicate of the layer.    Step 12Select your new layer and then go to Image > Adjustments > Shadows/Highlights and set the following settings: Shadows Amount: 40%; Highlights Amount: 0%.    Step 13Go to Filter > Other > High Pass and set the following settings: Radius: 15 px.    Step 14Change the Blending Mode of the layer to Overlay and set the Opacity to 30%.    Step 15Merge Layers to one and Rename it "Dusty Texture".    This is how our dust and scratches texture Photoshop effect will look after all the manipulations listed above:    4. How to Add a Dusty Texture to Any PhotoStep 1Now we can use our texture as a dust texture overlay! Go to File > Place and put your photo under the scratch dust and scratches texture layer.    Step 2Now let's add some vintage color correction to the photo. Make the texture layer Invisible.    Step 3Select your photo layer and go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves to create a new color correction layer.    Step 4Double click on the curves layer icon and use the following settings:    Step 5Make your texture visible and change the Blending Mode to Screen.
