How to Import Brushes Into Photoshop for iPad Posted: 30 Jun 2021 12:00 AM PDT Portability and the iPad go hand in hand. Combine that with the Photoshop iOS app, and you have an instant on-the-go photo editing machine.  So today, in this Photoshop iPad tutorial, I'm going to show you how you can download and install Photoshop brushes on your iPad, as well as how to import all of your favorite brushes you already have.  If you're looking for high-resolution and professional-quality brushes, then you should check out Envato Elements! How to Download Photoshop Brushes on an iPad Step 1   First, let's download a brush directly onto our iPad. I'll be downloading these Shader Brushes!   Once the download is initiated, a Download prompt will appear. In this Photoshop iPad tutorial I'm using Safari, so your prompt may look different, but we just want to confirm the download.    Step 2 Once the download is complete, you'll want to navigate to the Files app, which is a default pre-installed file manager app. In Files, locate the downloaded brushes. They're likely to appear in Recents, On My Ipad, or in Downloads.   If the file is in a .ZIP, just tap to extract!  2. How to Import Brushes Into Photoshop for iPad Step 1    Next, let's open up the Photoshop app and double-tap on the Brush tool to open up the Brush Tips.  Tap the three dots icon and choose Manage Brushes.  Step 2  Choose the three dots again and tap Import From Files. Step 3  The Files app will open wherever you last left off. So you can always tap the upper-left Back Arrow to navigate back to Browse and then locate the brushes if you need to.  What you want to select is the .ABR file. Mine is in Downloads, the Memento Shader Brushes folder, and then Memento Shader Brushes .ABR.  Step 4  Once selected, they will load at the bottom of the brush stack. You can turn a brush set or individual brush on and off using the right toggle. So if your brushes aren't appearing in the Brush Tip panel, double-check and make sure they are switched on!  Tap Done once you have your brush installed!  Step 5  Now, open up your Brush Tips, navigate to your new brush set, select a brush, and paint!  3. How to Import Brushes From a Computer to an iPad Step 1   Now, if you have a bunch of brushes on your PC and want to bring them over to your iPad, all you'll need is a file-sharing app of your choice! Google Drive, iCloud Drive, and Dropbox are all good picks, with my preferred being Dropbox.  Drag and drop your .ABR brush files into your file-sharing program, located on your computer, that is also synced with your iPad.   Step 2   Just like before, go to Manage Brushes > Import from Files and locate your brushes! I have both Dropbox and iCloud Drive; I used Dropbox this time around, so that's where it will be located.    Step 3 Tap to install, and then paint!  You're Done!   And that is how to import brushes into Photoshop on iPad! Given how easy it is to add brushes to Photoshop on iPad, there is very little stopping you from taking hundreds of brushes with you on the go! How to Change the URL in JavaScript: Redirecting Posted: 29 Jun 2021 09:08 PM PDT In this quick article, we'll discuss how to change the URL in JavaScript by redirecting. We'll go through a couple of different ways that you can use to perform JavaScript redirects. JavaScript is one of the core technologies of the web. The majority of websites use it, and all modern web browsers support it without the need for plugins. In this series, we're discussing different tips and tricks that might help you in your day-to-day JavaScript development. When you're working with JavaScript, you often need to redirect users to a different page. JavaScript provides different ways that you can use to achieve it. Today, we'll discuss how to perform URL redirections in vanilla JavaScript and with the jQuery library. How to Change the URL in Vanilla JavaScript In this section, we'll go through the different built-in methods provided by JavaScript to implement URL redirection. In fact, JavaScript provides the location object, a part of the window object, which allows you to perform different URL related operations. The location.href Method The location.href method is one of the most popular ways to perform JavaScript redirects. If you try to get the value of location.href, it returns the value of the current URL. Similarly, you can also use it to set a new URL and users will then be redirected to that URL. Let's go through the following example. console.log(location.href); // prints the current URL location.href = 'https://code.tutsplus.com'; // redirects the user to https://code.tutsplus.com As you can see, it's fairly easy to redirect users with the location.href method. Since the location object is part of the window object, the above snippet can also be written as: window.location.href = 'https://code.tutsplus.com'; So in this way, you can use the location.href method to change the URL and redirect users to a different webpage. The location.assign Method The location.assign method works very similarly to the location.href method, and allows you to redirect users to a different web page. Let's quickly see how it works with the following example. location.assign('https://code.tutsplus.com'); As you can see, it's pretty straightforward. You just need to pass the URL in the first argument of the assign method, and it would redirect users to that URL. It's important to note that the assign method maintains the state of the History object. We'll discuss this in detail in the next section. The location.replace Method You can also use the location.replace method to perform JavaScript redirects. The location.replace method allows you to replace the current URL with a different URL to perform redirection. Let's see how it works with the following example. location.replace('https://code.tutsplus.com'); Although, the location.replace method looks very similar to the location.href and location.assign methods to redirect users to a different URL, there's an important difference between them. When you use the location.replace method, the current page won't be saved in the session, and it's actually removed from the JavaScript History object. And thus, users won't be able to use the back button to navigate to it. Let's try to understand it with the following example. // let's assume that a user is browsing https://code.tutsplus.com // a user is redirected to a different page with the location.href method location.href = 'https://design.tutsplus.com'; // a user is redirected to a different page with the location.replace method location.replace('https://business.tutsplus.com'); In the above example, we've assumed that a user is browsing the https://code.tutsplus.com webpage. Next, we have used the location.href method to redirect the user to the https://design.tutsplus.com webpage. Finally, we've used the location.replace method to redirect the user to the https://business.tutsplus.com webpage. Now, if the user clicks on the back button, it would go back to https://code.tutsplus.com instead of https://design.tutsplus.com, since we've used the location.replace method, and it has actually replaced the current URL with https://business.tutsplus.com in the History object. So you should understand the difference between the location.replace and other methods before you use them. You can't use them interchangeably since the location.replace method alters the state of the JavaScript History object. And thus, if you want to preserve the state of the History object, you should prefer the other methods to redirect users. How to Perform URL Redirections With jQuery Although vanilla JavaScript offers enough options when it comes to URL redirection, if you're still looking how to do it with the jQuery library, we'll quickly go through it in this section. In jQuery, you can use the attr method to perform redirection as shown in the following snippet. $(location).attr('href', 'https://design.tutsplus.com'); As you can see, it's fairly easy to redirect users with jQuery! So that's about the different ways that you can use to perform JavaScript redirects. And with that, we've reached the end of this quick article as well. How to Use LUTs to Colour Correct Pictures in Affinity Photo Posted: 29 Jun 2021 04:52 PM PDT Photographers love Affinity Photo for their image editing, particularly as it offers the flexibility of using LUTs and presets to help colour correct and colour grade. LUTs – Look Up Tables – let you colour edit your photo without altering the original. You can make changes at any point after adding your LUT as it doesn't change your editing sliders, which is much more helpful than a simple Affinity photo preset or photo filter, for example. In this tutorial, we'll look at using LUTs in Affinity Photo to colour correct images. Rather than adding a stylised look, or heavy edit, colour correcting should help you bring your photograph to a good 'neutral,' particularly from a flat RAW image. You then have the option to colour grade too if you'd like to. If you need a set of LUTS to try, you can find plenty over on Envato Elements, where everything's included in a monthly subscription. In this tutorial I'm using this set: Ultra Color | LUTs pack for Any Software How to Use LUTs to Colour Correct Pictures in Affinity Photo Make Basic Corrections Treat your RAW image how you would usually, applying profile corrections and generally bringing your RAW up to a good level. This should be limited to things like toning down blown highlights; corrective rather than making any aesthetic changes. I've chosen an image that's slightly flat, so that you'll be able to better see the effect of a LUT. Make basic corrections When you've finished, click develop to convert your RAW and make the image ready for raster editing. How to Load LUTs into Affinity Photo To use your LUT you'll need to load it into Affinity. Adding a LUT In the Adjustment panel you'll see LUT, click on it to drop it down and then click the cog on the right and choose Import. LUT folder The LUTs are organised into folders in the case of the example pack I'm using. You can highlight each set and import them in a batch. Some of the sets are definitely on the side of colour grading rather than colour correction, but the Product set is quite neutral, so I imported those. Apply a LUT Applying the LUT I've applied 'Product_05' and you can see the image is immediately brightened, there's more contrast and increased saturation. Here's a before and after: Before and after LUT application When you applied your LUT, you'll have noticed a pop up box with more options. LUT options Opacity will reduce the effect, Blend to let you change how it's applied, and then a few others: Next to Load LUT is the LUT you've chosen, but you can actually load an individual LUT into here too, instead of going through the Adjustment panel. Merge will flatten your LUT effect down onto the photo. Delete removes the effect and shuts the panel, and Reset will remove it  but without closing the panel. Infer LUT won't apply to what you're doing now, but it lets you upload a prefiltered image plus the original unaltered, will work out how to recreate that filter, and then will create an exportable LUT for it. Neat! Adjust LUT You've got a different kind of base for your image now, but you'll likely still want to tweak that. Head back over to your Adjustment panel and make some changes. Make changes to the LUT effect Everything was a tad oversaturated for me, so my first tweak would be to just knock the Vibrance down a little to offset that. When you choose an adjustment – Vibrance in this case – you'll get thumbnail options to show you an effect, but when you click on one of those you'll also then get some slider options so you can fine tune. After adjustments Every adjustment you make will add an Adjustment layer in your Layers panel, so you can always delete it, you're never working on your actual image. In my adjustment layers above, as well as reducing the vibrancy, I've also taken the aqua edge off the grass with a Selective Colour Adjustment, and brought down the highlights a little so they aren't glaring You're All Done! Before and After Now you should have your image colouring at a good level where it would be fine to export and use if it's being used 'as is' or it's in a good position to colour grade or stylise it as you've given your photo a good base to work from. LUTs won't look the same across different images as they're using the information in your photo to make adjustments, so don't discount a LUT or set because it doesn't work for one of your images, it might be perfect for another. After a while you'll instinctively know which LUTs will look best across your work, and that'll make your editing process quicker and easier. In the meantime though it's fun to play around with different LUTs in Affinity and see how they look when applied to your photographs. How to Make a Grid Pattern in Photoshop Posted: 29 Jun 2021 09:00 AM PDT What You'll Be Creating In the following tutorial, you will learn how to make four different types of grid patterns in Photoshop and discover how to create a Photoshop grid overlay. What You'll Learn in This Photoshop Tutorial How to create a grid in Photoshop How to create a square pattern in Photoshop How to make a grid pattern in Photoshop How to create a grid texture in Photoshop How to make a grid overlay in Photoshop If you don't have the time to learn how to create a grid in Photoshop, you can always check out Envato Elements, where you can find a massive collection of Photoshop grid patterns. What You Will Need: You will need the following resource in order to create your Photoshop grid overlay: Tree photo 1. How to Create a New Document and Set Up a Photoshop Grid Step 1 Hit Control-N to create a new document. Select Pixels from the Units drop-down menu and set the Width and Height to 80. Select RGB for the Color Mode, and then click the Create button. Enable the Grid (View > Show > Grid) and Snap to Grid (View > Snap to > Grid). You will need a grid every 1 px, so let's go to Edit > Preferences > Guides, Grid & Slices, and enter 1 in the Gridline every box and 1 in the Subdivisions box. Change the grid color to Medium Blue, select the dashed grid style, and try not to get discouraged by all that grid—it will make your work easier, and keep in mind that you can easily enable or disable the Photoshop grid using the Control-" keyboard shortcut. Now that your Photoshop grid is set up, let's learn how to make a grid pattern in Photoshop. Step 2 Focus on the Layers panel (Window > Layers), hold down the Alt key, and double-click your 'Background' layer to unlock it. 2. How to Create a Grid Pattern in Photoshop Step 1 Focus on your toolbar, set the foreground color to black (R=0 G=0 B=0), and select the Paint Bucket Tool (G). Simply click on your canvas to fill your selected layer with black. Step 2 Set the foreground color to white (R=255 G=255 B=255) and grab the Rectangle Tool (U) from your toolbar. Create a 4 x 80 px shape and place it exactly as shown in the following image—the Photoshop grid and Snap to Grid should make it easier. Step 3 Using the same tool and color, create an 80 x 4 px shape and place it exactly as shown below. Step 4 Focus on the Layers panel and turn off the visibility of your black layer, and then go to Edit > Define Pattern. Type in a name for your grid pattern, and then click OK to save it. At the end of this tutorial, after you've learned several techniques to create a grid in Photoshop, I will show you where you can find this grid pattern and how you can use it. 3. How to Create a Square Pattern in Photoshop Focus on the Layers panel and turn off the visibility for your white rectangles. Make sure that the Rectangle tool (U) is still active, hold down the Shift key, and create a 16 px square. Place this shape exactly as shown below, and then go again to Edit > Define Pattern. Type in a name for this new grid pattern, and then click OK to save it. 4. How to Create a Hexagon Grid Texture in Photoshop Step 1 Hit Control-N to create a 304 x 380 px new document. Make sure that the Grid (View > Show > Grid) and Snap to Grid (View > Snap to > Grid) are enabled, and focus on the Layers panel. Again, unlock your 'Background' layer and fill it with black. Step 2 Select the Polygon Tool (U) from your toolbar, and click on your canvas to open the Create Polygon window. Make sure that you check the Symmetric box, enter all the settings shown in the following image, and then click the OK button to create your hexagon. Move to the control panel to remove the Fill color, set the Stroke color to white, increase the stroke width to 8 px, and then click the stroke type button and make sure that the alignment is set to Center. Step 3 Make sure that your hexagon is still selected and press Control-T as you need to rotate your shape 90 degrees. This can be done manually, or you can set the rotation angle to 90 degrees in the control panel. When you're done, just press Enter to apply the transformation. Step 4 Pick the Move Tool (V), hold down the Alt key, and add a copy of your hexagon exactly as shown in the following image. You can select both shapes from the Layers panel and then switch to the Direct Selection Tool (A) to be sure that those two sides overlap perfectly. Step 5 Using the same technique, add another two copies of your hexagon, as shown below. Step 6 Focus on the Layers panel, select all your hexagon shapes, and press Control-G to Group them. Press Control-A to load a selection around your entire canvas, focus on the control panel, and then click the Align horizontal center and Align vertical center buttons to easily move your group of shapes to the center of the canvas. Step 7 Select the Rectangle Tool (U) and create a 104 x 180 px shape. Fill this rectangle with R=255 G=26 B=121 and lower its Opacity to 30% just so you can see what lies behind it. With this shape selected and the selection around your canvas still active, return to the control panel and click the Align horizontal center and Align vertical center buttons to move your rectangle to the center of the canvas, as shown in the following image. Step 8 Focus on the Layers panel, hold down the Control key, and click your red rectangle to load a selection around it. Go to Image > Crop to crop the canvas around your selection, and then you can press Control-D to get rid of that selection. Step 9 Focus on the Layers panel, select your red rectangle, and simply delete it, and then go to Edit > Define Pattern. Type in a name for this new grid pattern and then click OK to save it. 5. How to Create an Isometric Grid Pattern in Photoshop Step 1 Press Control-Z a few times to Undo the latest commands and return to the larger canvas, and then focus on the bottom hexagon shape. Using the Line Tool (U) or the Pen Tool (P), create a 120 px vertical path. You can hold down the Shift key as you create this path to easily create a perfectly straight path. Again, apply a white stroke to this path and set the width to 8 px. Switch to the Move Tool (V) and make sure that you place this line exactly as shown in the following image. Step 2 Make sure that your line is still selected, and press Control-J to duplicate it. With this copy selected, press Control-T to rotate it 60 degrees, and then press Enter. Reselect your vertical path, press Control-J again to duplicate it, and then rotate the copy -60 degrees. Step 3 Grab the Move Tool (V), select your three lines from the Layers panel, and drag the copies on top of your other hexagon shapes. Step 4 Load a selection around your red rectangle and then go to Image > Crop. Step 5 Get rid of that red rectangle and then go to Edit > Define Pattern. Type in a name for this final grid pattern and click OK to save it. 6. How to Create a Grid Overlay in Photoshop Now that you've created your own Photoshop grid patterns, let's see how you can use them. Open this Tree photo in Photoshop, go to the Layers panel, and double-click it to open the Layer Style window. Enable the Pattern Overlay, and when you click that pattern thumbnail, you will find your four patterns. Select a grid pattern, enter the rest of the settings shown in the following image, click OK, and that's how you create a grid overlay in Photoshop. Congratulations! You're Done! 23 JavaScript Best Practices for Beginners Posted: 29 Jun 2021 08:53 AM PDT As a follow-up to "30 HTML and CSS Best Practices", this week, we'll review JavaScript! 1. Use === Instead of == JavaScript uses two different kinds of equality operators: === and !== are the strict equality operators, while ==  and != are the non-strict operators. It is considered best practice to always use strict equality when comparing. "If two operands are of the same type and value, then === produces true and !== produces false." - JavaScript: The Good Parts However, when working with == and !=, you'll run into issues when working with different types. When the values you're comparing have different types, the non-strict operators will try to coerce them values and you may get results that you didn't expect. 2. eval() is Bad For those unfamiliar, the eval() function gives us access to JavaScript's compiler. Essentially, we can execute a string's result by passing it as a parameter of eval(). Not only will this decrease your script's performance substantially, but it also poses a huge security risk because it grants far too much power to the passed in text. Avoid it! 3. Don't Use Short-Hand Technically, you can get away with omitting most curly braces and semi-colons. Most browsers will correctly interpret the following: if(someVariableExists) x = false However, consider this: if(someVariableExists) x = false anotherFunctionCall(); One might think that the code above would be equivalent to: if(someVariableExists) { x = false; anotherFunctionCall(); } Unfortunately, he'd be wrong. In reality, it means: if(someVariableExists) { x = false; } anotherFunctionCall(); As you'll notice, the indentation mimics the functionality of the curly brace. Needless to say, this is a terrible practice that should be avoided at all costs. The only time that curly braces should be omitted is with one-liners, and even this is a highly debated topic. if(2 + 2 === 4) return 'nicely done'; Always Consider the Future What if, at a later date, you need to add more commands to this if statement. In order to do so, you would need to rewrite this block of code. Bottom line—tread with caution when omitting. 4. Use JS Lint JSLint is a debugger written by Douglas Crockford. Simply paste in your script, and it'll quickly scan for any noticeable issues and errors in your code. "JSLint takes a JavaScript source and scans it. If it finds a problem, it returns a message describing the problem and an approximate location within the source. The problem is not necessarily a syntax error, although it often is. JSLint looks at some style conventions as well as structural problems. It does not prove that your program is correct. It just provides another set of eyes to help spot problems." - JSLint Documentation Before signing off on a script, run it through JSLint just to be sure that you haven't made any mindless mistakes. 5. Place Scripts at the Bottom of Your Page This tip has already been recommended in the previous article in this series. As it's highly appropriate though, I'll paste in the information. Remember—the primary goal is to make the page load as quickly as possible for the user. When loading a script, the browser can't continue on until the entire file has been loaded. Thus, the user will have to wait longer before noticing any progress. If you have JS files whose only purpose is to add functionality—for example, after a button is clicked—go ahead and place those files at the bottom, just before the closing body tag. This is absolutely a best practice. Better <p>And now you know my favorite kinds of corn. </p> <script type="text/javascript" src="path/to/file.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="path/to/anotherFile.js"></script> </body> </html> 6. Declare Variables Outside of the For Statement When executing lengthy for statements, don't make the engine work any harder than it must. For example: Bad for(var i = 0; i < someArray.length; i++) { var container = document.getElementById('container'); container.innerHtml += 'my number: ' + i; console.log(i); } Notice how we must determine the length of the array for each iteration, and how we traverse the DOM to find the "container" element each time—highly inefficient! Better var container = document.getElementById('container'); for(var i = 0, len = someArray.length; i < len; i++) { container.innerHtml += 'my number: ' + i; console.log(i); } 7. The Fastest Way to Build a String Don't always reach for your handy-dandy for statement when you need to loop through an array or object. Be creative and find the quickest solution for the job at hand. var arr = ['item 1', 'item 2', 'item 3', ...]; var list = '<ul><li>' + arr.join('</li><li>') + '</li></ul>'; I won't bore you with benchmarks; you'll just have to believe me (or test for yourself) - this is by far the fastest method! Using native methods like join(), regardless of what's going on behind the abstraction layer, is usually much faster than any non-native alternative. — James Padolsey, james.padolsey.com 8. Use Template Literals Strings that we create with double or single quotes have a lot of limitations. You might want to replace some of your strings with template literals to make working with them a lot easier. Template literals are created using the backtick character (`) and they offer many advantages. You can put expressions inside them or create multi-line strings. let person = 'Monty'; let fruits = 'apples'; let activity = 'playing games'; let day = 'Monday'; var sentence = person + ' will be eating ' + fruits + ' and ' + activity + ' on ' + day + '.'; console.log(sentence); // Output: Monty will be eating apples and playing games on Monday. var sentence = `${person} will be eating ${fruits} and ${activity} on ${day}.`; console.log(sentence); // Output: Monty will be eating apples and playing games on Monday. As you can see, we did not have to constantly move in and out of our template literal like we had to with regular string literal created with single or double quotes. This reduces chances of any typing related errors and helps us write cleaner code. 9. Reduce Globals "By reducing your global footprint to a single name, you significantly reduce the chance of bad interactions with other applications, widgets, or libraries." — Douglas Crockford var name = 'Jeffrey'; var lastName = 'Way'; function doSomething() {...} console.log(name); // Jeffrey -- or window.name Better var DudeNameSpace = { name : 'Jeffrey', lastName : 'Way', doSomething : function() {...} } console.log(DudeNameSpace.name); // Jeffrey Notice how we've "reduced our footprint" to just the ridiculously named DudeNameSpace object. 10. Consider Using let and const  The let keyword allows us to create local variables that are scoped within their own block. The const keyword allows us to create local block-scoped variables whose value cannot be reassigned. You should consider using the keywords let and const in appropriate situations when declaring your variables. Keep in mind that the keyword const only prevents reassignment. It does not make the variable immutable. var person_name = "Adam"; let name_length = person_name.length; const fav_website = "code.tutsplus.com"; if(person_name.length < 5) { var person_name = "Andrew"; let name_length = person_name.length; // Throws an error if commented out! // fav_website = "webdesign.tutsplus.com"; console.log(`${person_name} has ${name_length} characters.`); // Output: Andrew has 6 characters. } console.log(`${person_name} has ${name_length} characters.`); // Output: Andrew has 4 characters. In the above example, the value of variable person_name was updated outside the if block as well after we modified it inside the block. On the other hand, name_length was block-scoped so it retained its original value outside the block. 11. Comment Your Code It might seem unnecessary at first, but trust me, you want to comment your code as well as possible. What happens when you return to the project months later, only to find that you can't easily remember what your line of thinking was. Or, what if one of your colleagues needs to revise your code? Always, always comment important sections of your code. // Cycle through array and echo out each name. for(var i = 0, len = array.length; i < len; i++) { console.log(array[i]); } 12. Embrace Progressive Enhancement Always compensate for when JavaScript is disabled. It might be tempting to think, "The majority of my viewers have JavaScript enabled, so I won't worry about it." However, this would be a huge mistake. Have you taken a moment to view your beautiful slider with JavaScript turned off? (Download the Web Developer Toolbar for an easy way to do so.) It might break your site completely. As a rule of thumb, design your site assuming that JavaScript will be disabled. Then, once you've done so, begin to progressively enhance your layout! 13. Don't Pass a String to setInterval or setTimeOut Consider the following code: setInterval( "document.getElementById('container').innerHTML += 'My new number: ' + i", 3000 ); Not only is this code inefficient, but it also functions in the same way as the "eval" function would. Never pass a string to setInterval and setTimeOut. Instead, pass a function name. setInterval(someFunction, 3000);  14. Use {} Instead of new Object() There are multiple ways to create objects in JavaScript. Perhaps the more traditional method is to use the new constructor, like so: var o = new Object(); o.name = 'Jeffrey'; o.lastName = 'Way'; o.someFunction = function() { console.log(this.name); } However, this method receives the "bad practice" stamp without actually being harmful. It is a bit verbose and unusual though. Instead, I recommend that you use the object literal method. Better var o = { name: 'Jeffrey', lastName = 'Way', someFunction : function() { console.log(this.name); } }; Note that if you simply want to create an empty object, {} will do the trick. var o = {}; "Objects literals enable us to write code that supports lots of features yet still make it a relatively straightforward for the implementers of our code. No need to invoke constructors directly or maintain the correct order of arguments passed to functions, etc." — dyn-web.com 15. Use [] Instead of new Array() The same applies for creating a new array. Okay var a = new Array(); a[0] = "Joe"; a[1] = 'Plumber'; Better var a = ['Joe','Plumber']; "A common error in JavaScript programs is to use an object when an array is required or an array when an object is required. The rule is simple: when the property names are small sequential integers, you should use an array. Otherwise, use an object." — Douglas Crockford 16. Use the Spread Operator Have you ever been in a situation where you wanted to pass all the items of an array as individual elements to some other function or you wanted to insert all the values from one array into another? The spread operator (...) allows us to do exactly that. Here is an example: let people = ["adam", "monty", "andrew"] let more_people = ["james", "jack", ...people, "sajal"] console.log(more_people) // Output: Array(6) [ "james", "jack", "adam", "monty", "andrew", "sajal" ] 17. Be Careful With for ... in Statements When looping through items in an object, you might find that you'll also retrieve method functions or other inherited properties as well. While I'm a huge fan of web development blogs (like this one!), there really isn't a substitute for a book when grabbing some lunch, or just before you go to bed. Always keep a web development book on your bedside table. Here are some of my JavaScript favorites. I still do! 19. Self-Executing Functions Rather than calling a function, it's quite simple to make a function run automatically when a page loads, or a parent function is called. Simply wrap your function in parenthesis, and then append an additional set, which essentially calls the function. (function doSomething() { return { name: 'jeff', lastName: 'way' }; })(); 20. Raw JavaScript Can Always Be Quicker Than Using a Library JavaScript libraries, such as jQuery and lodash, can save you an enormous amount of time when coding—especially with AJAX operations. Having said that, always keep in mind that a library can never be as fast as raw JavaScript (assuming you code correctly). jQuery's each() method is great for looping, but using a native for statement will always be an ounce quicker. 21. Quickly Assign Variable Values with Destructuring We have already learned about the spread operator in JavaScript early in the article. Destructuring is somewhat similar in the sense that it also unpacks values stored inside arrays. The difference is that we can assign these unpacked values to unique variables. The syntax is similar to creating an array using the [] shorthand. However, this time the brackets go on the left side of the assignment operator. Here is an example: let [person, fruit, , day] = ['Monty', 'apple', 'reading', 'tomorrow']; var sentence = `${person} will eat an ${fruit} ${day}.`; console.log(sentence); // Output: Monty will eat an apple tomorrow. Did you notice how we just skipped the assignment of the third array element to any variable by not passing a variable name? This allows us to avoid variable assignments for values we don't need. 22. Iterators and for ... of Loops Iterators in JavaScript are objects which implement the next() method to return an object that stores the next value in sequence and true or false depending on whether there are any more values left or not. This means that you can create your own iterator objects if you implement the iterator protocol. JavaScript also has some built-in iterators like String, Array and Map etc. You can iterate over them using for ... of loops. This is more concise and less error-prone compared to regular for loops. let people = ["Andrew", "Adam", "James", "Jack"]; let people_count = people.length; for(let i = 0; i < people_count; i++) { console.log(people[i]); } /* Andrew Adam James Jack */ for(person of people) { console.log(person); } /* Andrew Adam James Jack */ With a for...of loop, we did not have to keep track of the total length of the array or the current index. This can reduce code complexity when creating nested loops. 23. async and await You can use the async keyword to create asynchronous functions which always return a promise either explicitly or implicitly. Asynchronous functions that you create can take advantage of the await keyword by stopping execution until the resolution of returned promises. The code outside your async function will keep executing normally. async function delayed_hello() { console.log("Hello Adam!"); let promise = new Promise((resolve) => { setTimeout(() => resolve("Hello Andrew!"), 2000) }); let result = await promise; console.log(result); } console.log("Hello Monty!"); delayed_hello(); console.log("Hello Sajal!"); /* Hello Monty! Hello Adam! Hello Sajal! Hello Andrew! */ In the above example, "Hello Andrew" is logged after two seconds while all other hellos are logged immediately. The call to delayed_hello() function logs "Hello Adam" immediately but waits for the promise to resolve in order to log "Hello Andrew". Video is often time-consuming and can be expensive to make, but there are some scenarios where product marketing videos do make sense. Let's look at a few examples to get started.
